The Wallsbnrg Creamery company was incorporated last week, with a capital of S3000. The incorporators number forty-tw- o residents of Wasatch county. A bag supposed to have contained several thousand dollars, was found by a workman while repairing the house of William Langton at Salt Lake City. Neither the money nor the workman can be located The money is supposed to be the hoarded wealth of Henry Smith, who died in the house several years ago. James T. Monk, who tested the mining recorder law in the courts last year, has been convicted of perjury in connection with the trial. The penalty is from one to ten years. The jury recommended him to the mercy of the court. A Spaniard was in Salt Lake City one day last week on his way to San Francisco, and the report gained circulation that he is an agent of the Spanish government, going west to inspect the Pacific coast defenses and other things. Tracy and Lant, two of the convicts who escaped from the penitentiarylastspring by bolding up the guard, will be returned to Utah if Colorado officers cannot convict them of complicity in the murder of Hoy at Browns park. If returned they will be tried for holding up the guard and relieving him of his clothes and for stealing a horse which they forcibly took from a passing man with which to escape. The ladies of Springville, instructed by Miss Pyerof Salt Lake City, are in a fair way to develop an Important industry. Ninety pounds of cocoons were produced from an ounce of silk worm eggs last week. Under the state law every pound of cocoons is entitled to a bounty of 25 cents per pound. The people of Utah, Washington, Weber and Cache counties are engaged in silk culture to a sufficient extent to entitle them to the service of a state instructor E. L. Lovesy, president, and John B. What the attitude of our government would be if representations in that line were addressed to it by European powers was a question that the officials actually do not care to answer in anticipation. The suggestion that the Spanish government has protested against the sale by Brasil of the two cruisers to the United States likewise fails to cause any feeling of concern, the naval officers holding that there can be no question of the right of the United States to increase its navy. WNk'i Warlike Preparations. Washington, March 13. The history of the week just closed will form a splendid record of what can be accomplished by the nation in a short space of time under the necessity to provide for the national defense. Beginning with the appropriation of $50,000,000 to be expended by the president without limitation, there follows rapidly the placing of orders for enormous quantities of war supplies, the institution of negotiations for the purchase of ships abroad, the enlistment of men for the navy, the creation of two addi POPE TAKING A HAND. tional regimentYof artillery, the comExerting Inflnenea at Washington to D Ismissioning of monitors, cruisers and lands Is From War. rams, the manning of new posts along London, March 15. Saunders vs. the Southern Pacific, on trial in Ogden last week, returned a verdict of $4909 for the plaintiff. It is said that the sum was purposely made less than $5000, the impression being that by so doing an appeal would be prevented to the supreme court of the United States. Thirty marines have been detailed to go with the Columbia or the Minneapolis. They are held in readiness to start at a moments notice. Some of the four-inc- h guns have been completed and shipped to Indian Head to be tested. Not a day passes but what guns of some calibre are finished and taken down by the tug Triton to the proving grounds to be tested. Two or three of the monster guns, with the exception of a fe w finishing touches to be put to the breech mechanism, are ready to be tested. A test was made of one consignment of rapid-fir- e guns, just received from the Colt factory at Hartford. It is known as the six millimetre and rapid-fir- e automatic Colt, and is capable of firing 200 shots a minute, with a range of 2000 yards. The test proved that the bullet would pass through a steel of an inch in thickplate three-eighness. These guns, of which three have arrived, will be used along the rail of vessels against torpedo boats, and also in the fighting tops. Activity Washington, March 14. Washington, March 15 A weeks negotiations closed today by the tri- umphant purchase by the nary department in London, of two fine cruisers built and building at Elswick, for the Brazilian government. Possibly the officials took more pleasure in closing up the business in this manner because of the knowledge that Spanish agents had been striving to secure these very ships and that to Spain it ia said, they would be of much greater value in case of trouble than to the United States. The next question la how to get the ships home, and that has not yet been settled, according to the secretary of the navy. The United States flag will be hoisted over the new ships within a week, probably, and just as soon as the crew can be put aboard the Amazonas she will start for the United States. The other vessel will follow at the earliest possible moment. The terms of sale are secret. Orders have been Bent to Commodore nowell.commanding the European station, to send a force of men from the San Francisco to take possession of and hoist the United States flag on the Brazilian ship that is ready to go into commission .at Newcastle.
