Show 8A Lakeside Review South, Wednesday, Jan. 11, 1984 Santa Has Sale Ends Jan. 17th Given Some Help More than 1,400 Davis Counpeople were the ty recipients of food and gifts given by donors through the annual 'county Sponsors for Santa program. According to the Department of Human Services, there was an increase in applicants for the program 'of only 2 percent, whereas the number of sponsors increased! by 35 percent. Davis presidents are becoming more aware that Sponsors for Santa is the Christmas help' program foif the county and are supporting .'it more strongly than in the paslt, according to Yvonne Spencef, department worker. After all families had been assigned; to sponsors, the depart- -' ment helped only 15 families this year as compared with 29 last yar. Giving Christmas assistance is becoming an annual project of a number of service clubs. The Clearfield American Legion, Bountiful Elk, Bountiful Kiwan-iBountiful Lady Lions, Bountiful Police Association, Hill Air Force Base, Kaysville Jaycees, Lakeview Hospital Employees, Layton Eagles, Layton Kiwanis, Layton Rotary, Ogden Does, and Roy Elks all sponsored several families this year. More than $2,000 was also donated. The money is used to buy food, clothing and toys for those helped directly by Human Services, as well as provide fresh food throughout the year to people in need of emergency food supplies. Some sponsors dressed in Santa suits to distribute gifts to children. Employee organizations report spending lunch breaks shopping for and wrapping presents. Service groups held projects throughout the year to raise money to help the Christmas program. Members of one employee group each donated their $20 Christmas bonus. people, in unusual circumstances, report having .their utility bills paid, their cars repaired, medicine purchased, and gift certificates donated to buy clothing. Most have expressed great appreciation for whatever their sponsor was able to do, and said it certainly made their Christmas brighter than it otherwise would have been. I believe the success of the program is due to the increasing numbers of Davis County people who are getting involved, said VerNon Griffeth, director of Human Services. n We feel that the to helping the approach needy that we see during the Sponsors for Santa program is beneficial to both the donor and the recipient. .
