A resident there REGANStartdard-Examine- r for 23 years, she calls herself a newcomer. The map hangs in city hall. Map points to towns past West Point quilt depicts town as it is, and By ANITA KERSEY correspondent she never knew by doing this quilt. First I designed it and then did Standard-Examine- r A new town WEST POINT map in the city building not only tells you where you are, but also where those before you were. The map shows the town as it is now, but also depicts how the city was when it was first settled, including buildings, new and old roads, fields, cemetery, housing areas and even sidewalks. But that's not all that makes this map different from other maps. Its not printed on paper as most maps are; it's stitched on a quilt. Women in the West Point LDS 5th Ward came up with the idea for the map-qui- lt when they were tasked with creating special projects in commemoration of the LDS Relief Societys 150th anniversary. According to Birdean Evensen, Relief Society president, the group got together one evening last spring and decided to do the map on the quilt for a civic project. They turned to one of the members, Julia Wise, for help. Julia is a very talented women and has a lot of artistic ability; but she didn't just design and stitch the quilt, she also did all the research for it and even spent one whole day of are no longer standing, are also shown on the quilt, such as the towns first store that was located across the street from the current school. The store was later moved to about 3978 West on the north side of street. It operated from 1913 until 1973 and also housed a barber shop on the west side and living quarters on the east side for the owners. The quilt shows the old canning factory that was built in 1925. It still stands today on the Wise property and is used to store hay and feed. A creamery was built iri 1 893 is shown as well as two railroad spurs. The towns only gas station is no longer used but still stands west of the city building that is located at 3016 W. 300 North. The house that is now the city building was owned by Roland Thurgood. One of his daughters, Doris Thurgood Page. Its hoped that people will take the town and year across the top. She stitched West Point City 1992 by hand. A legend is stitched on the upper right and left corners of the quilt that lists the type of stitches that correspond to items on the map such as sidewalks, old railroad spurs, schools, churches, and other buildings. She said the town used to be part of Hooper, then called Muskrat Springs. As growth continued. Hooper was divided into two counties, Davis and Weber, in 1877. Since the town was settled by people of the LDS faith, the north section was organized into the North Hooper LDS Ward on May 28, 1877. One June 26, 1877, the south side of Hooper LDS Ward was created. Then in 1 895, the south Hooper Ward was divided, and changed further through the years. Then in 1910 the name of South Hooper was changed to West Point because the ward was the most , westerly of any ward in the Davis Stake. All this detail is depicted in stitches on the quilt. The quilt also shows the four schools that have been built in the city. The first school, known as South Hooper, was built in 1876 at what is now 2040 N. 5000 West. The fourth school was built in 1911 on the spot where West Point Elementary School sits today. Church meetings were held in school buildings for a awhile and : then the first chapel was built in where all the sidewalks are, Even-se- n said. Wise says she worked on the quilt for about three to four months. This project was a challenge from beginning to end and I love challenges. I learned a great deal about the history of the city by doresiing this quilt, said the dent. Wise got most of the historical in25-ye- ar formation from lifetime resident Dora Bybee, a former teacher and principal at West Point Elementary School for 45 years. Wise says that although she herself has lived in the city for over 25 years, she learned a great deal of history that 1876 as shown on the quilt. In 1896, a new chapel was erected with materials taken from the first one and was located at what is now 1300 N. 4500 West. The third chapel was built next to the second chapel, which has since been tom down. The fourth chapel was completed in 1967 and is located at 3488 W. 300 North. sewing machine except the name dents.
