Show SHORTAGE OF CARS HOLDS ROAD IRK Transportation Conditions Responsible Re-sponsible for Delay in Our Road Construction. C. H. BIGBLOW IN CHARGE OF SOUTHERN COUNTIES Temporary Repair I'nder Way at Buckhorn Flat and Concrete Work Will he Pushed as Soon as Circum-fttanres Circum-fttanres Will Permit Other Delays. Charlie Bigelow, who has been put in charge of the road work of this and Washington countii's, ly the State Road CommiMhm, has spent the past three or four days in the northern part of the county arrunging for the repair re-pair of the Arrowhead Trail through the Buckhorn flat. Without question his is the worst piece of road on the Arrowhead Trail in this state, and we are glad to learn that it is to be made fairly passable at once. Mr, Bigelow has made a superficial survey sur-vey of the proposed temporary change in the route of the highway, which will follow as far as practically ihe foothills and avoid the beds of ilt which have been cut by the travel into deep ruts, bog holes and chucks. Where this is impracticable, surfacing surfac-ing material will be hauled to fill the ruts and holes. The temporary road now to be constructed, and work upon which hns already commenced, will i!so erve as a detour for travel while the strip of concrete is being laid, likely early next year. Mr. Bigelow was in Cedar City this morning and was seen by a Record scribe. He stated that the reason for the delay in the construction of the concrete road in Iron and Washington counties this fall, as originally announced an-nounced is the scarcity of transportation transpor-tation facilities. Only nine . ars of cement, Mr. Bigelow stated, were loaded for road construction last month, as a result of the labor troubles, troub-les, and it is impossible to even get enough cement and other materials moved to keep the concrete gangs at work between Salt Lake City and Provo. The steel strike is now tioing up the materials market and it Is im-possible im-possible to obtain steel With whim to repair the disabled cars which are to be found in all the railroad yards and shops. "Hand work for temporary repairs is all that we can expect for the present," pres-ent," said Mr. Bigelow. "The plans for tlie steel bridge across Cue Virgin, U'tween Bunkerville and Mesquite are practically complete, and it was ex- j pected that the bridge would b completed com-pleted by the 16th of March, but we ' vannot even hazzurd a gue.is as to , when material for the bridge can be obtained, under present conditions." The people of Iron and Washington Washing-ton counties are well pleased to have their roads placed In Mr. BLrclow's hands, knowing as they do the keen . interest which he feels and has all along manifested in the improvement of the Arrowhead Trail, and we will Rrest assured that if Mr. Bigelo-v re-mains re-mains on the job, there will be no unavoidable delays in the construction of the cement highway. Not only this, but C. H. Bigelow is one of the best road engineers in this state, and has spent the greater part of his life in road construction, which will assure that there will be no expensive ex-pensive or disastrouss mistakes in the location and construction of the highways high-ways through these counties. |
