Ibgelow. the indefatigable HJ and enthusiastic worker for the Ar M rowhead Trail, spent last Wednesday Hj night in Cedar City, and was in con- HJ ference during the evening with sev- H erel of our public spirited citizens, e- M plaining some of the accomplishments H thus far obtained, his plans for the H future and the general importance of M this groat highway or artery to all H the territory contiguous and the fit H ics forming the objectives at each end. H Mr. Higelow has spent a busy win- M lei and spring, lobbying, traveling M back and forth and boosting for ap- H propriations and provision; fcr the H improvement of the ro id at venous BBH points, and comes back from the south H and west with results of a most tang- M iblc nature. Largely. as a result of M his individual efforts and the help of M such friends as he has leen able to H enlist in the cause, he has secured ip- M propriations for the route running in- M to millions of dollars. Itesidcs the H $5,000,000 bond issue for this tate, H the grantor portion of which will be H spent, matched by an equ il amount H from the federal goveruncir, on the H great North and South State highway H that forms an important link in the H through coast trail, u very large sum, H ptolmlily retudung into thii uulliyilt:, I will be spent on the Trail by Cahl'or- H nia, JLiO.OOO will be spent at once by HI Arizona on a fed. . for the route in- WM to Utah via the Colorado River Iridic Hi with u bright, prospect for u larger H expenditure if the $10,000,tM)0 bond H issue passed by the lust leiri-dct ire H of that state receives the rituication Hi of the people on referendum: alii an M appropriation of 8890,000 from Nev- HJ ada state, Clark County, and the fed- H ml government. In the aggregate, HJ these amounts show a very tidy num und their expenditure on the Arrow- H head Trail will muke of it a v -ry tie- H cent and practical automobile high- H Mr. Higelow is known as the father HJ of the Arrowhead Trail, and a right HH generous, hustling old "dad" he is, to be sure. He has been working almost H constantly for the youngster for the H past four or five years, or since its H incepicncy, and will soon have accum- H ulated for it a competency. H To a representative of The Record H he unfolded some of his plans und ac- H complishments while in Cedar City. the details of which would form the B text of an interesting volume. In brief, the stutus of the highway is H about as follows: H Beginning at the California ml of the route, there is already approvi- B mately ill miles of concrete pav -incut, Bl and an additional Hi miles between H the summit of Cajon Pass end Victor- IB ville, has been authorized, whlei will sHH give a total of 107 miles out "f I o SMBj I Angeles Prom Victorvdle to Har- HafV .-tow, a distance of 88 miles, oil ma Bbm eadam has been authorised. ('lark county, Nev., has :n appropriation appro-priation of $290,000, including federal post road money nnd state fandt, which will put the section of the Trail in that county in first-class ships. This will include a bridge over the Virgin River between Mesniite anh Hunkervillc. On the line into Kingman, Ari.oim, which is a feeder line to the Trail and not an essential part of the main line) an appropriation of $80,000 bus been made for a steel bridge across the Colorado River, and nn Appropriation of $50,000 for the opening of a passable pass-able road from St. George to the bridge, with the promise of additional funds with which to construct i permanent per-manent road, if the ten million dollar bond issue is ratified, this Ari.ona-Utah Ari.ona-Utah road leing designated as one (of the four principal highways f the i state. Considerable work has been done I this winter on the road ihrouin the Indian Reservation Just beyond St. George, and all but one crossing of the Santa Clara river has been e'nni-nnted. e'nni-nnted. This will be bridged in the near future, the plans having already been prepared. These, with the improvements go-ing go-ing forward at various points in this state should place the trail in a very decent condition by the first of next September, and within a year from ithe present dnte, if Mr. Bigelow and I his co-workers remain on the job, it should be a boulevard from one end to the other. Its vnlue in an industrial, development develop-ment and military sense cannot be over-estimnted. Once it is in thoroughly thor-oughly good condition for tourist travel, trav-el, there will be dozens of cars passing through the settlements along the line daily, nnd the commercial value of this travel can hardly be estimated. Mr. Bigelow has not received the 1 support nnd assistance in this enterprise enter-prise that its importance has merited, but we believe that the people are re-i re-i ginning to sense what it means to ithem, and that from now on he will j not find it such hard sledding. He 'had the big vision of what this Trail would mean to the four states con-' con-' ccrned at the outset, and he has never (lost sight of the ultimate object, notwithstanding not-withstanding he hns had the heft of the load to carry. He will certainly leave a lasting monument for his name I with future generations, if he fails to obtain his reward as he goes along. |
