Show Opinions The Gunnison Valley Gazette Page 2 Letters to the editor... REGARDING THE FUTURE OF THE SANPETE COUNTY FAIR Dear Editor, There has been much debate concerning the placement of the new Sanpete Courthouse. There is no debate that Sanpete needs a new courthouse, just where it should be located. Some of the comments hold validity and need to be heard by all those in Sanpete County that have concerns about the courthouse. Another major concern is what will happen to the county fair grounds and most important, the county fair's future in Manti. The county commissioners have said that their "intent" is to rebuild the fair grounds and that the county fair will stay in Manti, the county seat. Those of us that have been in Sanpete have heard verbal "intents" to rebuild once existing structures, only to see the "intent" not be fulfilled. Gunnison was to rebuild their rodeo grounds to the satisfaction of those using it, only to have the arena erected without adequate fencing, water and lights. This forced the riding club and other entities using the facility to find a way to furnish them on their own. It has taken years, but the arena in Gunnison is still not the way "it used to be." Ephraim lost their rodeo grounds and there has been nothing done to restore another arena for them. What will happen to the county fair if the commissioners "intent" is not fully realized? It will only take one year of inactivity for the possibility of losing the county fair in Manti. It was stated openly at the meeting held earlier in July, "It would be beneficial to wait on moving the fair grounds until a complete master plan could be formulated." Placing the courthouse where the fair grounds now exist, we feel, would force a premature relocating of the fair grounds and the possibility of losing the fair to another community. Those of us that have worked on the Fair Board for 20-30 years and have participated at the Sanpete County Fair feel we have invested a good portion of our lives building up one of the best recognized county fair's in the state. But we now feel all this time and effort building up, this fair will be for naught if we are not assured rebuilding the fairgrounds and continuing the county fair will be the FIRST PRIORITY and not second to the jail, courthouse, pool or whatever may come next year. Renovating the fairgrounds has been put on the "back burner" many times over the years. Are we then in need of requiring a written agreement to assure the fair grounds will be in place next year? The county fair is the one thing in Sanpete that pulls ALL communities together for a common activity of enjoyment, sharing of talents and activities enjoyed by all. Manti is the county seat and is where the county fair should remain. We need new and updated fairgrounds, but with prior proper planning, not in a forced timetable that we are not ready for today.
