Show Page 10 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Thursday, May 10, 2007 Bulldog tennis finishes 2nd in region tournament The tennis team ended their regular season play with a 5-0 victory against Millard on Tuesday and a second place finish at region on Thursday and Friday. For the first time this year the southern region will be sending their top five finishers from each bracket due to there being eight schools in the south versus five schools from the north. Jeremy Reid drew a lucky third seed to start which meant he would not have to meet Jared Te’o from Manti until the finals. However, in order to do that he would need to beat both Jordan Mills from South Sevier and Derek Stapley from Parowan. (The only players besides Jared that beat Jeremy in the regular season) Reid lost the first set to Mills 4-6, but was able to turn things around and win the second and third set 6-4, 6-1. In the semi-finals Derek Stapley jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but was not able to hold off a more confident Reid. Jeremy won the semis in two sets 7-5, 62. Playing the best match of his young career Jeremy lost the finals to Jared Te’o in a close 7-6, 6-4 match. An impressive score considering Jared is undefeated this year and hadn’t lost ten games in all seven of his regular season matches combined. Jeremy finished in second place in the first singles division. Courtesy Photo/Tammy Hansen Front row left to right: Mitchell Anderson, Michael Oliver, Jacob Hansen and Erick Rosenvall. In his last match Jarom defeated Jeff Curtis from Parowan 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 giving him a third place finish in second singles. Dillon Bown started his play against a much improved Skylar Harris from Parowan. Harris won the match 6-3, 6-4. Dillon easily won his next match 6-0, 6-0 against Millard which put him in the consolation finals to see if he would qualify to go to state. His opponent would be David Webb from San Juan. The match went a marathon two hours long with Dillon finally prevailing 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 (giving Dillon a 5th place finish and an entry into the state tourney). The 1st doubles team of Michael Oliver and Mitchell Anderson won their first match against Parowan 6-3, 6-4. In the second round they played Richfield and lost 3-6, 3-6.
