Sponsored by the American Medical Joggers Association, Paris will lie attempting to conquer America's oldest annual race. The always-bus- y doctor has lieen in training for the 75th Boston Marathon since Decemlier and is frequently seen by Dugwayites jogging along the road. "I've lieen running off and on since long-distan- Octolier and seriously started training for the Marathon in January,'' noted the Dugway M.D. IS to 20 mile a day A native New Yorker, Dr. Paris runs 15 and 20 miles a day after he completes his daily work at the hospital. "Last weekend I ran to Ditto and back in two and one half hours," the military doctor commented. "It gave me a little confidence and helped silence some of the razzing I was getting from the other officers." The Marathon is the most famous of races, the epitome of ' endurance and the amateur spirit. Other competing amateur events attract star athletes only by paying their expenses generously. But the Marathon, sponsored by the Boston Athletic Association each Patriots' Day (a state holiday enlivened by parades and costumed Minutemen), grows in appeal from year to year even though it charges a $2 entry fee and provides only a laurel wreath and gold medal to the winner. To the next 34 finishers go small trophies or bronze medals, while all those who finish in under four hours receive a certificate attesting to their race time and placement. The others in the field get a free bowl of beef stew afand a podiatrist to treat terward e blisters. their 3tt hours goal "Leg cramps are really, my only fear," said Paris. "Actually," he continued, "111 be trying to do it under three and one half hours." The Marathon is the only race in the world where a man can lie happy alxnit merely finishing, .delighted at being beaten by only three hundred other runners, and ecstatic alxnit placing in the top one hundred. Annually, the Boston Marathon attracts one of the largest crowds for any sports event, some 250,(XK) people, and matches the world's greatest distance runners with an incurably optimistic g array of jogging and enthusiasts from all over the United distance-runnin- States. physical challenge The physical challenge, as described in a recent Readers' Digest article, is "like that of an unconquered mountain so compelling that even the disabled sometimes cannot resist competing, ... unofficially." For example, you might rememlier when the 1970 Marathon started, Gene former Marine Rolierts, a who had lost both legs in Vietnam, pushed his wheelchair onto the course and Boston. After headed for downtown seven hours and some hills, Rolierts reached the finish line. Then there are those women runners who hide liehind shrulilKTV, or among cooperative male runners for a chance to nin. And five of the six women who completed the 1970 Marathon finished well before half of the men. Male and female, young and okl, they 11 all be among the 1,000 contestants competing with Dugway's Sain 385 yard course. Paris in the Mrs. Paris, daughters Anne Marie and Francine, and son Tommy will lie glued to the Television set on April 19 for reports on the 75th annual Boston Marathon and, specifically, for word on how Sain Paris from Dugway Proving Ground fared. The Paris family won't lie alone in their interest in this year's Patriot's Day uliservance in Massachusetts. Many radio 220-foot-hi- 26-mil- e, and tv sets throughout the Proving Ground should lie tuned in, checking on their doctor and neighbor Sain Paris. "26 miles-10- 00 contestants.
