and alleys P M Indi indians ansin in thistle valley A letter published this morning in a city contemporary makes the somewhat startling announcement that application was made three or four days ago to general smith at camp douglas for troops to protect the settlers of thistle Valle yin this territory against the violence of the indians serious trouble with the aborigines in utah has been of comparatively rare occur ence ewing owing to the policy generally rene gene rally raily pursued by the geiple of fee feeding dirig rather than f fighting them and as rumors of indian troubles always cause considerable uneasiness in the public mind the s sooner booner their truth or falsity is ascertained and made known the letter an old well known and reliable resident of sanpete San Sau pete in the vicinity of thistle valley who nho is a lover oven over of fair play and square dealing lw hether whether for whito white man can nan or red called at ut this office this morning and being extensively acquainted with both whites and indians indiana in that vicinity as well as with the circumstances out of which the alleged difficulty has grown he gave us the following information which wo need only to be published to at once dispel all ail aux in regard to indian difficulties n the locality in question some Som eyears years ago bishops seeley and ind tucker the former fohmer of mount pleasant the latter of fairview in and partly cultivated a farm in thistle valley for the special benefit of such indians in that artof the territory as desired to their nomad life settle bettle oh a farm and learn to cultivate it I 1 indian ti dian llan joe and his band baud availed themselves of the opportunity and settled on the farm and from that imo ime until the prese arese present nt it has been cnown amon among g the tte people as the indian dian ilan farm for some come time back joeand joe and his band have not been on having left it probably I 1 for a trip or visit among their friends ads in other localities after departure of the indians wo or three other parties took nos bos session of the farm claiming to hold it under the preemption pre emption law but very recently joe and his band returned eind ind naturally enough wished to take possession of their old quarters one of ot the parties in possession recognizing izing the justice of their claim at once resigned la in their favor being willing in common with the bishops and the people generally that the indians should again come to live on ion the farm but two other individuals who had bad made a pretended preemption pre emption of land fenced and partially improved by the jabor labor of others refused to leave and threatened to kill any indians who came to the farm with phe intention of staying there on this account the indians got gob mad and as almost any white man would ouid do gave e the jumpers a very plain PI ain aln I 1 intimation uti mt av t on that they intended d to h have av m the their ir rights if they had to resort to force to obtain them this we are assured is the only foundation for the present outcry of trouble with the indians in that locality and for the application to the general commanding at camp douglas for troops if this statement ent i is true as we havo have no reason to disbelieve and we expect in a few days to be ablo abio to present to our readers a verification of it it is 18 the indians who have a right to demand protection from the luie injustice Just icib and chicanery of bad white men iother rather than white men who need protection from the of bad indians our informant also added that indian joeand joe and aud his band have generally been friendly and in eise cise c use ise of real trouble between the settlers and any of the aborigines abor ignes they thea have almost invariably assumed a friendly rather than a hostile part we trust that the foregoing will have a tendency to allay any pub bile anxiety that might otherwise be felt felb in relation to this matter we have the best of reasons for believing that our version of the affair is substantially full and cor egr and if so it will be seen that it does not call for the interference of the military it being merely an individual dispute and not a matter in which the interests of the public generally are at all jeopardized in two or three days at furthest wo expect to bo be able to publish an account of the matter from the authorities ties in thistle valley through whose wise counsels we hope that the difficulty will be settled and full justice done to all concerned white men as well as red J as we were going to press we received the following telegram which furnishes the explanation promised of the alleged indian difficulty in thistle valley fairview april 1875 A M H musser deab DEAR BRO the trouble with the indians amounts to joes band sixteen indians trying to re grill possession of the farm that they had improved heretofore and some ill III feeling was manifested bee bec because ause aust h ir was refused them all is amicably settled now lieutenant bucha buchanan naul nany douglas being apprized of all tile the facts being present at the interview expressed his surprise that such a small affair could raise such au excitement especially as the tho indians are particularly anxious to go to farming like whilo while folks A great deal of the talk in relation to this affair has been caused alpar antly by a morbid desire for excitement and I 1 would say to all alf suu sut suh h parties that they cau quiet their neives nerves nerves for their apparent anti antl cipa elpa eions will not be realized if ifa a shadow of honorable treatment ia i a ol 01 oil oll served towards said baid L aid indiana Indi anz aur tile the parties that
