But-tar- s, Saturday morning at the Fran Brown Beauty School in Layton. Although the other mayors in North Davis County were not in attendance to sign the declaration, all elected officials said they recognize the contribution professional cosmetologists make to our lives. During the week of Oct. 1st, cosmetologists will return some of the support they have received from the public back into the communities. Complimentary haircuts, permanent waves and beauty care products will be given to people living in convalescent centers and other individuals who cannot usually afford these products and services. TIME AND products will be donated by local beauty schools and beauty parlors. The importance of the cosmetology profession in a community can be explained by citing the contribution one beauty schools can make to the area. At Fran Browns school there are 71 students. The school has been opened one year. Instructor Alan McElroy says students are enrolled from every North Davis Community and from Roy. THERE ARE work release programs functioning between beauty schools and the Davis School District. Students can receive high school credit for attending beauty school for up to four hours per day. This has proven to be a good alternative program for students who are not achieving in the regular high school programs. Mayor Purdy who is the assistant principal at Davis High School says the work release program has given many students the opportunity to graduate from high school and make worthwhile community contributions. TO BECOME a licensed cosmetologist in the state of Utah re quires a minimum of 2,000 class room hours in a licensed school. This is about 52 to 56 weeks of training.
