Show WEEKLY RirLEA, DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, MAY 2, 984 Become Falcons Lady By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports KAYSVILLE -- - According to Clearfields Bart Thompson, it would be quite alright with him if a vote were taken to conclude the 1984 track and field season after the results of the 28th annual Davis High Track and Field Invitational. WITH IT, the Lady Falcons winwould have been the clear-cu- t ners of the 1984 championship as they piled up 97 points to Altas 80 and Webers 74. But, said Thompson, I believe we can do it again. Everything came together for us at Davis and theres no telling how much better we can get. LEADING THE way for the Davis Morgan Nelson clears 6-- 8 Lady Falcons again were Stephanie Clements and Laura Zaugg. on this jump to take second. This junior-senio- combo made r Darts, Lancers Have Their oments; Falcons Get 2nd By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports - MUCH OF THE thanks for n track event has to another go to Davis High coaches, Mike Shaw and Frank Thompson, who worked well into the early morning hours days before the meet to finally get it organized. Alta pulled a fast one this year by clipping Clearfield for the boys title, winning by an 85 to 80 margin. Viewmont was third and host Davis High was fourth. Layton was fifth and Hillcrest finished sixth. well-ru- CLEARFIELD HIGH 1 was a little surprised, but not said Clearfields John Flint, Alta is getting better with each week, just like the rest of the state is getting better. They performed brilliantly in some areas but in others we didnt quite come through. really, of what is to come at the state meet. Alta, ourselves and Viewmont will be battling our lives out for the state crown come May in Provo for the state crown. This meet was a mirror of what is to come, he said. Clearfields brightest areas last weekend came from Ricky Smith in the 400 meters where he nipped Todd Larsen of Alta for first place and set a new state record of 49.33 in the process. Ricky was also a member of the winning mile relay team and was also fifth in both the 200 and 100 meters. He just barely missed being named the meets Outstanding Ahtlete. ANOTHER pleasant finish was that of Sterling Allen in the javelin, where he finished second to Davis Jeff Ohlwiler with a toss of 174.20. I believe that Sterling is one of the finest javelin throwers in the state and hopefully this meet has given him some confidence for the future, said Flint. Craig Carter got his revenge over Bonnevilles Chad Law by winning the shot put with a personal best of 56 feet and 5 inches. Law beat Carter at Weber State a few weeks earlier. Carter also got his discus act together by getting a throw out which helped him place third, one place ahead of Bonnevilles Law. THE MILE relay was another Clearfield prize event as Duane Rock, Doug Evans, Don Gladfelter and Smith combined to beat out Layton for the gold. The time of 3:27.61 was one of the finest times of the year for the Falcon quartet. Other impressive finishes for the Falcons were Hal Schofields leap in the high jump which gave him third place. It was the first time this year that Schofield has been beaten in the high jump in a major invitational. IN THE shot put, Kim Thurgood gave Clearfield more points by taking fourth and sophomore Vaun Waite got his finest finish of the year by taking fifth with a throw of A picture 148-1- 1 6-- 48-- year, said Jones about Kidd and Lacey. handoffs. Hanor was particularly impressive with a great comeback LACEY, WHO may have a future of college football to look at, still wants to get back at it. But Jones is being careful to monitor the situation. But even without Lacey and Kidd in the sprint relay, the Lancers came up with a combination that blew everyone away, enough in fact to give them first place in the Davis High Invitational. The Lancers took first in that event with a clocking of 44.45 which was just ahead of Viewmont and Alta. Kealamakia continued his strong showing in the hurdles as the junior hurdler took second in the 300 meter hurdles and fifth in the highs. Larry Helms of Roy beat Terry by just fractions of seconds in the 300 lows to get first place. Terry also ran the final leg of Laytons second place mile relay team. DAVE BRIMHALL took third in the shot put behind Bonnevilles Chad Law and Clearfields Craig Carter. But Brimhall also finished sixth in the discus event which was a first for him this year. The Layton medley relay team finished fourth at the Davis High Invitational and Chuck Hanor was sixth in the 200 meters, his finest finish in that event this year. 6-- KAYSVILLE Without a little warming up by the sun on Saturday, the 28th annual Davis High Track and Field Invitational could have been in trouble. But it finally did peep through and the state's longest-runnin- g track invitational turned into another success story. ITS JUST also. TODD WALKER had a high jump of 2 and finished sixth in that event, his best performances of the year. 6 8. Duane Rock, besides helping the mile relay team win, finished fourth in the 800 meters. And in the mile run it was Todd Davis who gave Clearfield a fourth place finish DAVIS HIGH SCHOOL "We dont have enough to beat Clearfield and Alta, but Im still extremely tickled with the way our kids have come through this seahead coach son, said second-yea- r Mike Shaw, We have beaten Layton a couple of times in a row who I consider to be a very good team and were very close to Viewmont who always come out with solid teams. THE DARTS hosted the 28th annual Davis High Invitational and finished fourth with 58 points, just six points behind Viewmont who was third with 64. The consistent people for the Darts again were Eric Thompson and Jeff Ohlwiler who again won their respective events. Thompson was tops in the discus with a throw of 159-- seven feet better than his nearest competitor. Ohlwiler was tops again in the javelin and this time threw the spear some 183 feet and 3 inches. THE COMBINATION Kealamakia and Tony Walters ran together for the first time this year, each performing almost perfect in Record Holders A Breed Apart 6, IM PARTICULARLY impressed with Jeff who has come through this year to do real well in the big invitationals, where last year he had a tendency to choke in them. At region he was great last year but was horrible in state. Hes responded real well to pressure this year. Eric is just getting better every week. His throw last week was his best ever. Im as proud as heck of him, said Shaw. ANOTHER GREAT finish for the Darts came from Morgan Nelson in the high jump and longjump. It was particularly pleasing to Morgan who has had a tough time of it so far this season. Nelson went 8 in the high jump and actually tied Brian McClerry of Alta but missed first place on more misses than Brian. But the 8 jump was by far his finest jump of his career. Nelson was also second in the long jump where his leap of 2223t was second to Hillcrests Marty Haws leap of 22 feet and six and a half inches. I WAS very proud of Morgan for sticking in there and coming through, said Shaw. Other sparkling finishes for the Darts included Jeff Singleys impressive second place finish in the high hurdles. Singleys time of of 14.95 was just a second from the winning time of Chris Wehrlis who was clocked at 14.92. Singley is getting better and better with each week. Singley was also fourth in the 300 meter hurdles. MORE IMPRESSIVE finishes were garnered by Greg Willard who finished fourth in the high jump, the mile relay team which took fourth and Matt Kimball's fifth in the 3200 meters. 6-- of Mike Tucker, Chuck Hanor, Terry in his leg. - SALT LAKE CITY Breaking a state record is a big deal, thats because the record and the boy or girl who breaks it are in a class of their own. RICKY SMITH became the third Falcon to put a name in the state track and field record book. He did it last weekend by running a 49.33 in the 400 meters, breaking-MikMathesons old mark of 49.45 set back in 1980. The other two Falcons are Jackie Beene who still holds the 100 yard dash record of 11.31, set back in 1977. The other is Mark Carter who shot put record of holds the 613'2 set in 1981. NO BOY or girl from Layton or 4-- A 4-- A Davis presently holds a state record in track and field. Records that could be broken within this year or in the next couple of years could probably come from Clearfields Stephanie Clements in the 400 meters. The state record is presently held by Camille Davis of Weber who in 1981 set a mark of 57.33. If Clements doesnt get the record this year, shell get it next year probably. DAVIS ERIC Thompson, a junior, might end up breaking the discus record of 180 10 set by Orrin Olsen of Orem back in 1971. Craig Carter, sophomore, might end up beating his big brothers mark of 61 3V. Craig has already got out beyond 56 feet. shambles of the field. Their point total together was 38 points which would have ranked them third in the state as a team. Stephanie won both the 200 meters and 400 meters and was a member of the winning sprint relay team as well as the second place mile relay. For all of that she was named the meets Outstanding Athlete, an award she is getting quite popular in winning lately. ITS BEEN three track events in a row that she has now won the award. Clements ran the 400 meters in a time of 57.76, which is just hundredths of seconds away from getting a new state record, a record both Thompson and Coach John Flint of the mens team feel she will get before she graduates next year. Clements nearly made it four first but her courageous effort in the mile relay fell short by of a second. Zaugg is doing the best to make her final year at Clearfield a joy to remember. She won the 300 meter hurdles, took third in the 100 meter hurdles, was also second to Clements in the 200 meters, and placed second in the 100 meter run. ZAUGG WAS winning the 110 hurdles but had her knee crash into a hurdle midway through and had to settle for third in that race. This is the week, (Friday at BYUs prep invitational), to watch for Laura to try and repeat as the states hepthalon champion. OTHER outstanding performances for the Clearfield women in- cluded Sharon Andersons first place in the 100 hurdles in a time of 15.59. Anderson is getting better each week and quickly overcoming the injury that kept her out of com- petition for so long. Besides winning the 110 hurdles, Anderson took fourth in the 300 intermediate hurdles. Other members of Clearfields winning sprint relay included Michelle Manning, Kris Done and -- Anderson. DONE NOT only helped the sprint relay and the second place mile relay, but she also placed fourth in the open 400 meters. Kerry Bell was splendid in the women's discus where she took second place to help her teams cause that much more. THE FALCON girls were also sixth in the medley relay. (Watch next week for an indepth story on the Clearfield womens track and field team.) LAYTON HIGH SCHOOL The Lady Lancers had their finest day in track and field last weekend at Davis High as they finished with 25 points and a tie for seventh place. IT WAS just good solid depth that got the seventh place finish. Layton never had anyone finish higher than third, but plenty of girls filled other spots to earn the high finish. Carol Day was third in the high jump, Samantha Mattingly was fourth in shot put, Merrit Nielson was fifth in the 100 hurdles, Pat Montano was fourth in both the 100 and 200 meter runs, Wendy Ortiz was fifth in the discus and Carol Day was sixth in the longjump. DAVIS HIGH SCHOOL Only four points were scored by the Lady Dart track team last weekend as the team continues their wait for the return of their star runner, Wendy Hunter who is still on the injured list. THE FINEST finish by the Davis girls was in the medley relay where they took fifth. Tammy Duke, Sonya Rees, Sarah Hiller and Cindy Sorenson combined for that finish. Myra Palmer also gave Davis a sixth place in the 800 meters and Sarah Hiller was sixth for Davis in the high jump. Continued Baseball Report one of the Darts mainstays on the ipound. DAVIS WAS to host Bountiful on Monday and then play Woods Cross on Tuesday. Going into this week the Darts in third place behind were Highland who was 2 and Bountiful who was 4-- 4, 5-- 5-- 3. WE CONTROLLED our own destiny going into this week, said Coach Kent Draayer, A couple of wins would have been nice to get us into the playoffs. David Cole and Carlson were to take the mound for the Darts this week. r OKI SAILS 30 OLDSMOBILES TO CHOOSE FROM 6-- See and test drive the 1985 Olds 98 featuring a new compact size, front wheel drive, independent h suspension and engineering. all-ne- w three-hundredt- all-ne- w -- 4 Sessions -- r - J June 5 June 18-2- 9 I 4-1- II III July IV July 23-Au- 9-2- 0 g. 3 Registrations New allocation soon to arrive. They are seniors and mean a lot to our program, said Russ Jones. AND THE concern was valid.
