Theyve got to step up and make those plays to be a winner' Cook said. The Lancers have thrown the ball a lot this season, but the running game was a big key to victory Friday. They (Cottonwood) were coming with a lot of pressure. They were bringing seven on every down so we ran some trap plays. Cook said After a scoreless first quarter, the Layton defense forced Cottonwood to punt from its own goal line. Adams caught the punt at the 50 and returned it to the 30 to put the Lancers in business. Salt Lake had virtually no chance to make it to the PCL needing six wins at the end of the SALT LAKE 9-- semi-final- s, season. The Buzz then proceeded to go on a convenient winning six-ga- streak, beating Fresno on the last day e of the season with a two-ou- t, home run by catcher Matt LeCroy in the ninth inning. The Buzz met the Vancouver Canadians in the PCL Pacific Division Championship. Vancouver quickly took the first two games of the series, and it seemed that the Buzzs luck had run out. However, Salt Lake made for a weekend to remember as they tied the series with consecutive wins on Friday and Saturday night in Salt two-strik- 2-- Lake. The hero and inspiration for the Buzz came from first basemen David Ortiz, the PCLs leading RBI man. Ortiz suffered a sprained knee in game one of the series in Vancouver, and sat out in the game two loss. When Ortiz was left off the lineup again in game three, he refused to not play, convincing Buzz manager Phil Roof that the game was too important for him to sit out. Roof used Ortiz as the designated hitter in the next three games. In the third inning of the game, Ortiz hit a home run, providing the Buzz with the energy to score seven more runs and win the game We made it to the playoffs, he said after the game. Now that were here what weve got to do is win. Ortiz again came through in game four on Friday night, hitting a blast to carry mammoth three-ru- n the Buzz to a 4 win. With the win, the Buzz forced a deciding game five, and proved that their late season surge was anything but a fluke. In the final game Sunday afternoon, it looked as if nothing could stand in the way of fate, as the Buzz went into the ninth inning with a 5 lead. Salt Lakes hopes were shattered however, as the Canadians showed disciplined, fundamental hitting, taking reliever Tony Fiore for five base hits and four runs. Fiore allowed the winning run in game two to score, with a wild pitch 8-- L 6-- 7-- in Vancouver. We played our hearts out, said Roof in the Buzz locker room. I dont think many people expected us to be here today This year's stint in the playoffs was Salt Lakes first trip to the post season since 19. The Buzz's major league affiliate, the Minnesota Twins waited until the playoffs were over before making any late season promotions in September. Ortiz, who has already hit nine home runs this season with the Twins, was called up for the rest of Minnesotas season.
