Northndge running back Jared Larson earned three Clearfield linemen with him, as he ran for a three-yartouchdown bringing Northndge within two points. Another Knight's sconng chance was mined, when Falcon lineman Cody Sorenson blocked a pass, forcing Northndge to punt. The two rivals met Friday night in the Region 1 opener, and once again. Northndge w as unable to figure out the formula for success against the Falcons. Clearfield came out on top in a 23-1- 4 victory: The Falcons overcame a 0 defiat at halftime to record the win against the Knights. Northndge fumbled the ball on then first play of the game, but obtained possession again after recovering a Clearfield fumble. Junior running back All Prathan found the rush for Northndge's end zone on a three-yar- d first touchdown of the game. The second quarter showed superb defensive efforts by both teams, as neither squad could find a way to score. Brady Stuart and Josh Wilson made key tackles in the second to stop several Northndge 7-- drives. Bronson Smith and Patnck Loboto each sacked Clearfield quarterback Jared Moultne. and Anthony Fresaues intercepted a Moultne pass. Hie top five Region 1 schools will be invited to play in the state tournament. The Lancers continue to play outstanding defense, but still yearn for better looks at the net on offense. "We're playing well on defense, but need to work on offense. We did some things a little better today on offense, said Layton Coach Nancy Christensen. "Northridge played OK. They've got m some good players. she said. The Knights continue to play close with most the teams in the region, but still have a goose-eg- g in the win column. Northndge had a great chance to take a lead in regulation when it was awarded a direct kick inside the box. But Stratford added to her collection of highlight-ree- l saves to preserve the shutout for the Lancers. Shots on goal were about even for both teams. Northndge keeper Nickie Torrez helped her squad with excellent fine saves. For the Bengals, this was a big game as their late coach, Lynn Freestone, had coached his last game on the Darts' home turf. Freestone was killed in an auto acadent, Saturday, June 19 as he and his family were returning from Lake Powell. For the Darts, emotions were high for the players and the coaches. Davis was trying to rebound from a tough loss the week earlier to Mountain Crest and having one of their captains. Shane Barkdull unable to play For Davis coach. Jim Dickson, this game meant a lot to him personally "I have had this game on my mind a kit this week. Lynn Freestone was my best friend in football. and to have Lynn's last game on this field, we 11. my emotions were running high for me. With Shane hurt, and Bryce (Stevenson, defensive back and kicker) best friends with Shane, this game meant a kit to them It only seemed appropriate that the Davis and Bnghton fans observed a moment of silence for Freestone to start the game, and then the cannons went off. We had moments that we took charge and then they came charging back. Both teams refused to quit Dickson didn't pull any punches when he said that the backfield judge missed the call on that crucial fumble. "That was a clear fumble and he really blew it That was as big a fumble as we have had in years. But I think that this gave us a barometer of how we ll play in region.
