Show Jazz swat Hornets The Utah Jazz had a chance Monday night to do something they werent able to do all last season --beat the Charlotte Hornets. And they did, 110-10- 0. Already shorthanded with all-s- tar forward Larry Johnson out of the game with a sprained ankle, the Hornets lost second year guard Khalid Reeves when he also suffered a sprained ankle one minute into the second period and was unable to return. Jazz coach Jerry Sloan was thus able to play all 12 of his active players and the Jazz used offensive spurts at the end of the first three quarters to defeat the Hornets, 1 10-1- 00. The injuries to Johnson and Reeves, coupled with the NBAs blockbuster preseason trade which sent disgruntled center Alonzo Mourning to Miami and brought Glen Rice to Charlotte, has caused the Hornets to stumble early this season. Charlotte won 50 games last season, but the Hornets are off to a rocky 9--12 start after falling to the Jazz. Game No. 20 Jazz 1 10, Charlotte Hornets 100 .4 The Jazz trailed the Hornets, with 2:55 to go in the first half when David Benoit slammed home a rebound and John Stockton buried a three point basket to give the Jazz a lead they would hold to the games end. Gift ideas for the outdoorsman About this time each year, I write up a list of Christmas gift ideas for those who enjoy the outdoors. In making the list, I usually leave a hint or two about things I wouldnt mind finding under the tree on Christmas morning. But this year, instead of listing things that would be fun to receive, I came up with a list of gifts you can give. I hope it provides some ideas that will help with those on your list. your skills and knowledge, and committing a little time, you can introduce a child, relative, or neighbor to the joys of the outdoors. If you dont have the patience, or ability to teach someone else, book a trip with a local guide. They can provide the equipment, and knowhow thats necessary for a great trip. Another welcome item is the gift I have given my older kids ski lessons on Christmas of knowledge. presents, but other lessons are available. Local sporting goods stores, specialty shops, or gun When I asked my family if there were any outdoor gifts they would like to receive, my 5 year old said she wanted a sled. She has learned that snow and cold can mean lots of fun. I have learned that you cant beat the energy, enthusiasm and fun that comes from sledding with a 5 year old. One of my sons suggested a new knife to replace the one he lost while deer hunting. I was given a Buck CrossLock Knife earlier this year. The knife has two locking blades, one which is designed for stores can help you find classes in fly fishing., fly tying, reloading, or shooting. Many people have been introduced to the outdoors through reading. There are numerous excellent writers who convey the outdoor experience. If your recipient wants a good laugh, find a book by and warm socks. These items always make good presents. If your skiers have enough clothing, consider giving a ski pass to one of our local resorts. Last Christmas, I gave one of my sons a combination hunting and fishing license. I dont know about his other presents, but the license received good use all year. A hunting or fishing license is a great gift for someone who enjoys the out- . Stats: Karl Malone was the games leading scorer with 24 pints, free throws. Utahs Felton Spncer played his best game since his Nov. 22 season debut against Sacramento. Spncer hit five of seven shots from the field and grabbed three rebounds in 15 minutes. Center Matt Geiger, who also came to Charlotte in the Mourning trade, played 27 minutes, scored 1 1 pints and collared nine rebounds. Geigers physical game was more effective against Malone than the efforts of rookie George Zidek of UCLA. Both teams had trouble handling the ball, Charlotte giving up 29 pints on 27 turnovers and the Jazz losing the ball 20 times which led to 23 pints. Comments: tough game. We should have scored 120. If we hadnt turned the ball over, we might have had a chance to win the game. Gill: Answering with a slight smile when asked by an Idaho sprts-castif John Stockton was the best guard he had to play against: Well, hes smart. Hes been around a long time. Hes a great player. If they want to learn more about the world around us, consider giving field guides, such as the Peterson Field Guides published by the Houghton Mifflin Company. For younger outdoor lovers, look for the Peterson First Guides, which are colorful, informative and simple to use. Petersons most recent addition is a guide to Forests, but the field guides for Butterflies and Moths, and Urban Wildlife are also excellent resources. Giving a gift for the outdoors will help develop and pass on the traditions and enjoyment we find in our outdoor experiences. It is a great way to help preserve the life we know, and will certainly be appreciated on Christmas day and throughout the coming year. With the victory, the Jazz pushed their record to 14-- 6, and maintained their position lurking right behind the division leading Houston Rockets in the Midwest Division race. The top individual matchup of the night was Stockton against Charlottes Kendall Gill. Gill was anxious to get out of Charlotte last season when he was traded to Seattle, but seems equally content to be back in Charlotte now, perhaps a testament to his somewhat tempestuous relationship with Sonics coach George Karl Gill tried to maintain a physical presence against Stockton, but in the end the Jazz guard got the better of the duel, matching Gills 18 points while handing out 15 assists to just five for Gill. Adam Keefes offense also helped the Jazz secure the victory. Keefe hit six of eight shots from the field and scored 15 pints. And Chris Morris got the last laugh 110-10- 0 m m t mi er |
