ESPN will The Jazz, facing road games at Denver Friday and Golden State Saturday, close out a homestand. Wildcats -S- , We were not in the game at all. We took a step backward rather than forward tonight, Hill continued. We just werent intense. I didnt think I had to get anybody up to play Bountiful. The Braves dominated the boards, led by center Dave Hibberts 20 rebounds, to control the contest. Bountiful outrebounded the Cats 47-2- 6. 58-4- 7. We cleaned up the boards. It was their desire, heart and effort. It was just a matter of being in the right place at the right time, said Maxwell. And weve been working hard on our defense. If you play it, youre going to 8-- 2-- 2-- be in ball games. Defense proved to be the operative word and Bountiful wasted little time 1, implementing 0-- 2. labeling Utah? lead by holding Woods e double-figur- iL Im disappointed. I dont know Woods Cross managed just six what to say, said Woods Cross coach Steve Hill. Theyre a good team, but we just didnt show up. After surrendering the lead in the first two minutes, the Wildcats never recovered. Bountiful eventually built a 22 point advantage in the fourth quar points in the first quarter and scored just once during a five minute stretch. A 10-- 2 run put the Braves ahead 1 and set the tone for the rest of the 1- -4 night. In the second quarter, the Wildcats were limited to three field goals and a Go Cross without a field goal for more 4 than four minutes. The Braves led at halftime. Leading 42-3- 0 at the end of three quarters, Bountiful rubber stamped the game with a 12-- 0 run to open the 26-1- rs 8-- ps fourth period. The 0 deficit proved too great to overcome as Woods Cross drew no closer than 1 1 down the stretch. 52-3- friday, Dec. 3 BOUNTVUL 11 Dirk Facer Woods Cross U 8 6 WX at Sports Editor 68 47 18 16 18 17 BRAVES (SB): Alien 21. And while the Utah Stars did evolve into one of the most successful operations in the American Basketball Association, capturing the 1971 league crown, fact is, the nickname fit the state like a round peg in a very square hole. Sorry folks, the Osmonds just didnt cut it as superstars. Years later, after the Stars had gone gently into that good night, the New Orleans Jazz sought refuge in the cozy confines of the Salt Palace. A contest was opened to solicit a new name for the perennial league also-ran- s. However, such hometown suggestions as the Brine Shrimp, Salt Shakers and yes, even the Stars, were dismissed. The financially-strappe- d franchise elected to keep its cajun heritage. One can only hope, and pray if you will, that the New Jersey Devils or Los Angeles Raiders never set up shop in the Beehive State. Jazz officials offered varied reasons for their insanity. Financial considerations were no doubt paramount, but owner Sam Battistone had another motive. He was looking for paybacks and redemption. Someday, he said, people will respect this organization. Perhaps so, but the nickname is simply awful. Its almost like calling a team in New York City the Stormin Mormons. And as if the Jazz name, which has endured through success, wasnt bad enough the team eventually moved into an arena. While recognizing Delta Air Lines contributions to the Salt Lake City community, one can only imagine a team nicknamed the Jazz playing in a complex known as the Delta Center doing business in Cajun Country somewhere near the French Quarter or along a swampy bayou. Unfortunately both entities exist in the shadow of the everlasting hills. Dont get me wrong, Im glad Salt Lake City has professional basketball and a showcase arena, but I just dont like the names. This leads to a stinging reaction to the Buzz nickname. ' What is a Buzz? Who is a Buzz? Where is a Buzz? Do you Buzz? Does he Buzz? What about her? Can a verb become a proper noun? Many of these questions will be answered next April when Salt Lake Citys new ball team takes to the field. I cant wait to hear the first hive, swarm and sting references (I guess I win). Times have changed. Remember when a Buzz was simply a bad haircut? Nicknames are no longer something to rally around. Cute and colorful is in well, at least thats the snake oil Utahns are being sold.
