THREE Next Saturdays Battla Will Give the First Real Lina on Coach Yoata Team. CHICAGO, Nov. IS. With the tin inti nt the football season of 1905 less than three weeks away, interest, which has been unusual In the west this season, is bound toelncrease until the curtain has been rung down on the final act on Thanksgiving day. in the east, where the big games are not allowed to interfere with turkey dinners, the end will come a week from next Saturday. There remain three games in the west which will have an important hearing on the rating of the leading elevens. The first of these in point of time is the Wisconsin -- Michigan affair at Ann Arbor next Saturday, the second the Northwestem-MInnesot- a game at Minneapolis a week later, and the last, and most important of all, probably, Is the Michigan -- Chicago battle scheduled for Marshall Field Thanksgiving day. Wisconsin and Michigan. Saturday's Ann Arbor game will give the first real line on Tost'a team which 11 has been possible to get this year, an nothing on the Wolverine schedule to dnte haa forced them to do anything near their limit, it is believed. That Yost has a powerful team, no one How strong no one knows, doubts. It Is not probably not even Yost. known even how heavy the team 1s, for it is the statement of all who have seen the team in action that the weight sof the men as announced are far below the real figures. Just what Michigan hopes to gain by this policy of concealment cannot be guessed, as the element of possible surprise is eliminated by the fact that the team haa been on public exhibition reeat-cdl- y. Chances of Badgers. Wisconsin's chances In Saturday's game, therefore, are a matter of conjecture only. The Hedgers exhibited h strong defense against Chicago, then e.piiarently .neglected its defense to improve the offense for the Minnesota game. On what Kings men showed In either one of these games alone they would have a small chance "of beating Michigan. But if Wisconsin can perfect the defense shown agnlnat the maroon, eliminate the rumbling of punts and the uneven charging exhlb- - A Big Tea and Coffee sale. Enormous Premiums Free. The development of Melxner as a drop kicker has been rapid, and he demonstrated against the Gophers' that his kicks were to be feared any time his team had the ball inside the thirty-yar- d line. To offset this Michigan has Hammond's place kicking, which it a more hasardous method of attempting field goals, but an easier way to kick them If all goes well. Short of Substitutes. In considering either Wisconsin's or Chicago's chances against Michigan, the fact must be taken into consideration that no team can be expected to play against the Wolverines for seventy minutes with eleven men. The mere weight of Yost's line, without taking into consideration the speed and power which it is known to iMtssesB, is bound to wear down any team of lighter weight. And neither King nor Ptagg Is well equipped with substitutes To Chicago the of varsity caliber. loss of Boone seems almost Irreparable on this account alone. After next Saturday Chicagos chances against Michigan will be bet ter determined In all probability than at present. The test given the Ma roons last Saturday by Purdue did not enhance Chicago's outlook as much as it did Purdue's. Coach Hermatetn demonstrated he had a strong team already, with some splendid material on which to work another year. He should be able to make Purdue a factor in the west so long as his material holds nut. WALCOTT'S BAD MEMORY. Dental Parlors c.iii-tliiii- Point-Cariis- le 2465 WASHINGTON AVE. Now. in tile CHse of Mathewmiii and Bresnahun, I could not see one ball pitched that was wrong. It wus aa though the bat tery knew hand whut would be the weakness of the batter and what kind of a ball would be necessary to fool hint, and liad it figured nut so that only a waa program really being rendered, number for number. 1 never saw Mathewsnu give a baiter the second time the same kind of a hall he itad hit safely before, and If the man at the bat had proved that he had no partlculnr weakness, he mixed them up hi the must effective way I ever saw. In the case of that big right fielder, for Instance Mathewson Beyhold would send the ball swiftly over the plate one minute at a speed the eye could hardly follow, and the next min ute one of those slow boys would float up until he had Beyhold jubblng about with a short ttrm motion, completely at sea what to do. It is hardly neces sary to enlarge on Mathewson's work, for the result speaks for Itself, and Is one of the most wonderful records 1 ever knew. But Bender and Dank deserve more credit than losing men are apt to get. Both showed, through the catcher, fuiinle Mack's master hand at training. Neither of these men made an unnatural move. I watched them closely, and every act waa the perfection of pitching art. The fact that there was a runner on base, that the vast crowd was rooting like mad, even that the Athletics were losing the game none of those things most trying to a pitcher's nerve had the slightest effect upon either Bender or riank. Upon Coakley it did have Its effect he is a younger man and haa not been under Mack's training for a sufficient time but Bender and Plank were superb. Cool, putting into, effect every bit of Information they had about their opponents, using every wit to its utmost every moment, their pitching, even though they lost all but one game, was one of the sights of a lifetime. Mack certainly has pitchers of the kind who delight a manager's heart."
