Just as the clock In the tower of the city hall chimed forth the hour of 10 last night Councilman Max Davidson caught the eye of President Carr and obtained the floor to protest against the action of the mayor In discharging Frank Christensen from his position In the street department because he had refused to support and advocate the alleged candldncy of the mayor for United States senator. Mr. Davidson said the discharge of Christensen was a disgrace to the city. Mr. Christensen began his duties at a salary of IS per day, but this was afterwards Increased to IS per diem. Mr. Davidson contended that the mayor discharged Christensen for personal reasons, because he would not support him for the United States senate. Councilman Williams was the only absentee. City Recorder Critchlow was not present and his place was filled by Miss Minnie Brown. The first business was the opening of bids for the construction work In sewer district No. 9. The following were the bids: Gllmartin A Zltsman, 2; $54,280.87; Wheelwright Bros., J. P. O'Neil, $51,498.79; P. J. Moran, Salt Lake, $48,759.18; Gibbons ft Co., Denver, $42,492.37; Louis C. Kelsey, Salt Lake, $41,498.28. On motion the bids were referred to the committees on sewers and laws. John B. Hughes, representing Gibbons ft Co. of Denver, and D. N. Straup, representing Kelsey of Salt Lake, started to address the council on behalf of their respective clients, but they were Informed that they would be heard before the committees and consequently subsided. P. J. Moran was the only bidder for the paving of Wall avenue from Twenty-fourth to Twenty-fift- h streets, his bid being $9,710. The committee on finance reported that a tax levy sufficient to raise $500 per annum for the Carnegie library would be made provided the library board receive $5,000 from Mr. Carnegie. The Trades and Labor assembly was granted the use of Lester Park pavilion for their annual celebration of Labor Day. The estimates of J. P. O'Neill, amounting to $12,513.50 for work done In the curbing and guttering districts and on sidewalks were allowed and ordered paid.
