O wSlV (BGtn)dl basketball coach at Clearfield High School the past four seasons, has announced his resignation, effective at the end of the current school year, to pursue advanced studies at the Brigham Young University. At B.Y.U coach Reid will be working with Coach Frank Arnold as a graduate assistant, and will help with the varsity basketball program in recruiting out of state and m scouting. In making the announcement Coach Reid said, I am looking forward to achieving goals I have had all my life, and I look at this opportunity as another way to move just a bit closer to those goals. He added, I have long had the ambition of perhaps moving into the college coaching ranks, and this move is a step closer toward fulfilling that desire, Over the four seasons at Clearfield High, Coach Reid has compiled an enviable 7 win loss record overall, and a 3 win loss record in league play. In addition his teams have reached the state tournament all four years, have been rated in the top 10 all four years, with a rating in the top 5 defensively, for three years. His teams placed 2nd, 1st, 3rd, and 3rd in league play over the four years, placing in the State Tournament two 59-2- 32-1- The Clearfield High School Girls Gymnastic team recently took second place in Regional Gymnastic competition with a total of 440 points, losing to winning Viewmont by a mere two points. The team then placed seventh in State competition held March 30-3- 1 at Woodscross High. The 19 girls making up the team are: Dawn Beers, Sharon Chicado, Lisa Christensen, Jan Dahle, Sherrie Davis, Lori Johnston, Nancy Nelson, Linda Owens, Sherry Owens, Sheri Stevens and Bev Wood. The competition consisted of four events, bars, beam, vault and floor, with beginning, intermediate and compulsory routines in each event. The team works out each day at 6:30 a m according to coach Syd Conley. She said this team has done better than any previous Clearfield High girls gymnastic team. W'e are looking forward to next year because all the girls will be coming back, Coach Conley said. The team is made up of juniors and sophomores. 97-4- high-jumpin- g Coach Roger Reid of Clearfield High School submitted his resignation this week as Head Basketball Coach to take a position as Graduate Assistant to Frank Arnold at Brigham Young University. Coach Reid will work on a Masters Degree in Physical Education at B.Y.U. He will work as assistant coach and do a lot of scouting and recruiting for the Cougars. Coach Reid came to Clearfield, from a similar job in Payson, Utah. Prior to that he played professional ball in the triple A league of the Atlanta Braves system. Roger Reid graduated from Springville High School in 1964, and played freshman basketball and baseball at B.Y.U. From there he went on to the College of Eastern Utah to play basketball, and was recruited to Weber State by Dick Motta, where he played both basketball and baseball. He signed a contract to play professional baseball, but after two years, came into the coaching ranks. When Roger came to Clearfield, he hooked up with Craig Hansen. The two athletes and coaches were not strangers. They first met on the hardwoods of Springville in 1964. That was the year that Clearfield played and lost to East for the state title n In a game in Springville, Craig Hansen had the difficult Red Devil named Roger Reid.
