The copper mining industry in the Twelfth Federal Reserve district, its present condition and the factors influencing its future are treated in a scientific manner by John Perrin, chairman of the board and Federal Reserve agent Federal Reserve bank of San Francisco. The public reads a great deal about the losses in agriculture, but Mr. Perrins report shows the farmer is in clover compared to the copper industry.' The condition of copper mining is reflected in figures showing that production of the metal in the United States is at the rate of 20 per cent of r normal production. Stocks of refined copper and blister and material in proceps of refining on January 1, 1922, were 793,000,000 pounds compared with average stocks of 360,000,000 pounds. The price of electorlytic copper dropped from 35.74 cents per pound in March, 1917, to 12 cents per pound in August, 1921, and March 1 was 9.6 per cent under r the average price. The level of prices of all commodities at wholesale, according to index number, is 27 per cent above the pre-wlevel. The condition of the copper industry is of particular importance, especially in Arizona and Utah. Sixty-on- e per cent of the blister copper produced in the United States in 1920, and 34 per cent of the world's output, was produced in the seven states of this district. Thus it will ie noted., that copper mining is vital to the prosperity of; the. intermountain section and its partial resumption the; first of April, an event of major import, if continued and increasing operations can be main- tained throughout the summer GUARDi notice. taken up immediately,, by., the people.
