When given a free hand private industry always has met and overcome critical situations. Never was this better illustrated than in the case of the oil industry which fortunately escaped unlimited political control during the Compared with war. it has been able to expand in its own way to meet the needs of the nation. Instead of an oil shortage we have on hand today the greatest supply of gasoline and fuel Since then in our history. The machinery has been shipped, the site of drilling staked, and all other preparations are ' being made by the Ute Petroleum Company to test the structure. Robert W. Gibson, geologist and field superintendent for the Ute, arrived here last Friday, and together with Justius H. Cline, has staked the drilling site which is between Indian and Skitzy Canyons, about six miles southwest of Duchesne. In the mining situation the future for the silver producers is exceedingly bright. Fair profits through the $1 an ounce government price is assured for more than three years and an advance above this price for all world markets appears likely within the next few months. The gold companies should be able to report more favorable conditions as a result of lower production costs. . Manager Charles Zabriskie states that the drift on the 500 level of the property is now in a distance of about 100 feet. On the 100 level a drift was sent out to the contact and the showing there indicated that greater depth was needed to get into the values, consequently Manager Zabriskie took up drifting on the 500 level. At this latter point another hundred feet of work it is thought will be sufficient to reach the break and this new work will be watched with a great deal of interest. Lehi-Tinti- c H:l COPPER IN THE HOME. Discussing the condition of the copper industry William A. Paine, president of the Copper Range Company, says: Copper always has been a neces- sity in industry and will continue to be. Copper must and will come back, stronger than ever. Speaking of copper in the raw state and copper in the finished product, Mr. I 1 ! 1 Paine stated that there is too wide a margin between what the producer re-- j ceives for the metal and what the fabricator gets for his output. If this could be overcome it would encourage a wider use of. copper and prove ter both for the producer and the fab- ricator. Large copper producers have been considering the manufacture of their copper into finished products for direct distribution to the trade in order to encourage the use of copper. Every family in the country should have at least one copper wash boiler, a copper and one or two copper stew pans, not to mention numerous other articles which can be made of copper and add to the utility and attractiveness of the home. tea-kettl- e Every effort is being made to get ready to drill the test well on the i Alma Peterson, formerly of Eureka, is directing the development of the Tintic-Silve- r property of North Tintic, in which well known Provo people are now interested. The claims which this company has taken over are in what is known as Broad Canyon, west of and it is underscood the Lehi-Tintithat a tunnel will be driven into the mountain for some distance preparatory to sinking on the vein. Trucks have been used in hauling the necessary supplies to the property and from all reports the development of the ground is to be handled on an extensive scale. c, 1 ! 11 William D. Loose states that the lessees who are at work in the Grand Central mine at Mammoth are now taking out a very nice tonnage of ore and that the output for the month of August will likely amount to about ten carloads. About ten men are working on leases in the Grand Central and all of them find their way into the mine through the Mammoth, the machinery at the Grand Central being placed in operation only when it is needed to hoist the .pre which these, men are mining. Shaft sinking has been started from the 200 level of the Little May property, following installation of machinery. Contract for sinking the shaft from the 200 to the 300 level is in the hands of Ryan brothers and Hulsman who expect to complete the work in forty-fivdays. Development work on the 200 level Is being pushed ahead with results satisfactory to the management. e Sinking the shaft at the Tintio-Daviproperty, which has been carried on under contract, is progressing in a satisfactory manner and much greater speed can be expected now that the company has installed a small compressor. This new machine was put in running condition a short time ago. s At least $2,500 will be needed to make an adequate showing of the mineral resources of Utah at the convention of the American Mining Congress, which will be held in Chicago during the week of Octobel 10, according to the findings of the mining committee of the Salt Lake Commercial Club, which held a special meeting Saturday afternoon. The committee also instructed the secretary of the club to send a communication to C. A. Allen, state mine inspector, commend' ing the idea of holding an institute for mining operators during the week of the state fair, and promising the movement the support of the commit- an opportunity of getting in on the ground floor for a future fortune. News from the New Quincy this week is to the effect that small seams of ore are coming in the face of the workings, with every indication that an ore body is in the close proximity. The stock is very active on the Salt Lake Exchange, with an upward tendency in price. Ore conditions are improving daily and never in the at the Park-Utahistory of the property were evidences of a big producer more definite and certain than they are today, says the It is a Park Record and continues: mine beyond any question of a doubt. The high water in the drain tunnel h, is still harassing ore removals but it is steadily receding, and it will be but a short time before water conditions is normal. At present only about two cars of ore are shipped weekly. A At the King Consolidated conditions are such that assures a mine. Tuesday of this week in the drift off from the upraise recently started, a fine body of high grade ore was encountered, practically a full face, but because of soft ground, timbering became necessary, and development on the new ore body has been delayed. The ore goes down, and within the next day or two work will be able to be resumed in the face, and it seems certain the uncovering of a permanent body will result. tee. REVERSE PROFITS. H. E. Havenor, who for some years past has been employed as geologist at the Tintic Standard mine in the Tintic district, has announced his intention of moving to Salt Lake where he will open an office and handle the business of a number of mining operators who, no doubt, will be anxious to avail themselves of his services. Further reductions in the price of high explosives have been announced, according to information which reached the Utah offices of the Hercules Powder Company this week. These reductions, effective August 20th, and applying to carload lots, amount in a general way to 25 cents on 100 pounds of powder. Saturday, the last day of the Utah State Fair, has been set aside by the Utah State Fair Association to feature mining, minerals' and mineral products of the state. Both the United States Bureau of Mines and local mining interests have reported their in making willingness to the day a success. A colored man from Kentucky drove to a loose leaf tobacco sales warehouse in one of the Indiana cities on the Ohio with a load of tobacco. When he received his sales slip and weights he noticed the customary blank check was missing. Approaching the cashier Look here boss, where is he said: my money for this here tobacco? The sales sheet was consulted. Its like this: The expenses for weighing, unloading and commission for selling your tobacco amounted to more than the tobacco was worth. You see, you still owe us just 59 cents, explained the cashier. Well, thats all right, I guess, but I aint got a cent with me. The next time you are coming over the river, just bring along a chicken with you and we will call the deal square. Within a week the colored man appeared in the office with two chickens, one under each arm. Here are the chickens. Sure but you didnt have to bring two of them; one would have paid the bill. The sincere hope of every Summit county resident is that the promotors will strike oil in the first hundred feet, and that every Coalvillian will have JOB.
