Show THE CITIZEN THEODORE ROOSEVELT AND HIRAM JOHNSON This photograph, taken at Chicago in 1912, is of interest because Mr. Johnson, who was then running for Vice President, is now campaigning for the Republican nomination for President. A letter from Mr. Roosevelt is reproduced below; it is now used as a document in the 1920 campaign because of the Colonels opinion expressed in the sentence, You are perfectly safe in following his lead. OYSTER BAY LONG ISLAND, N. Y. January 19th, 1916. dear Williams:- I am touched with what you tell me about Booker T. Washington. I appreciate your letting me know. As for my views on the situation, I simply do not know what to say. I am trying to keep in touch with Hiram Johnson, for, of all the public men in this country he is the one with whom I find myself in most complete sympathy. My You Mr. are perfectly safe in following his lead. With all good wishes, Sincerely yours , Edgar Williams, Esq., Prest. State Civil Service Commission, Sacramento, Cal. |
