Show JOHN 0 DEAD honored pioneer and patriarch closes brilliant career WAS 79 YEARS of AGE had been identified with the history cf brigham city since 1855 in the death of patriarch john D burt which occurred in this city sunday morning this community has suffered a great loss he has been identified with the growth a and ad d history of brigham city almost from its inception and has been a prominent figure bot both h in a political and an ecclesiastical way ile he was a man of unusually strong character firm convictions extraordinary tra courage both moral and physical and absolutely loyal in the fullest sense of the word to all his frie friends ads and associates one remarkable feature of his character was the strong affection he felt and exhibited tor for those with whom he associated in this part of the country he was extremely tenderhearted tender hearted and he gave one that impression upon all occasions naturally his family and the near relatives will miss him most but he will remain ion long in the kenderest ten derest memories of a host best cf pioneers and old settlers in this city we feel to sympathize with the family in their loss but we believe that he had only solicitude licit liel ude tude was that thac lie he might remain faithful and dutiful to his god unto the end that he did this everyone who knew him during his last days can heartily testify biographical john joha D burt was the son of andrew and isabella hill burt and was born jan 12 1827 in dunfermline scotland he became a member of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints may 19 1848 and married elizabeth patterson in august of the same year a few days after he left his native country to seek a home among the saints of cf zion worked in the mines near st louis until the spring of 1851 arrived in salt lake valley september the and came to brigham city in 1855 and was ordained a high priest by lorenzo snow in the fall of that year in 1858 he was appointed adjutant under major john sharp in the echo canyon campaign and was in the general move south the next spring on his return he acted as deputy sheriff under S B cutler tor for ten years and as sheriff tor for another ten years including the eight years he was marshal of brigham city he was probate judge of box elder county tor for five years was also a lieutenant colonel in the territorial territorial militia under col chester loveland and held that position until the nauvoo lesion legion and militia were disorganized when br ham city was divided into wards jr in 1877 he was ordained and set apart as bishop of the third ward five years later he was chosen as second counselor in the stake presidency of the eos box elder stake which position he held until he be was called to fill a mission to great britain in march 1885 when he was assigned to labor in scotland where he remained about two years in the tall fall of 1886 on oa his return home he was called on a mission to the sandwich islands where he remained until 1893 when he returned home tor for a brief visit and then went back to the islands accompanied by his wife lizzle lizzie snowball burt anil ani some of the children ke he presided presided over the mission there until Us his return home since then he has been the president of the high priests quorum of the box elder stake tor for about tn ten years and for or tuesday at 2 p in bishop thomas H blackburn of the second ward where deceased was a member took charge sin singing ing by the tabernacle choir thou boet not weep veep to weep veep alone prayer by patriarch edwin P coradon of willard singing Is it well with my soul today bishop blackburn was the first speaker he felt that ta the occasion was not one of mourning in one sense of the word but we might rejoice to think that our brother who has been with us so long and has set us such a worthy example should be je permitted mittia to leave this his probation and enter into the rest he has so fully earned he had known the deceased tor for upwards of thirty years and was thankful to have enjoyed his company and his anti entire re confidence ile he referred feelingly to the confidence that had been placed in him by brother burt during that shameful period known as the crusade he also took occasion to say that deceased had for years been a faithful member of the annd 2nd ward sunday school and that he was an authority on church doctrine lie he also paid a high tribute I 1 to sister lizzie burt who has so faithfully and tenderly nursed her husband during his last illness patriarch william watkins followed with a fervent testimony to the truthfulness of what the first speaker had said patriarch watkins had been very intimately associated with the ilie deceased I 1 la n every walk of life and knew him well felt that it is a great thing to be a faithful latter day saint elder james pett counselor in the presidency of the high priests quorum had been acquainted with brother burt for over fifty years and said during that time we have walked side by side and worked shoulder to shoulder through all the trials of the early settlers in referring to the remark of the late president lorenzo snow when he said there are forty men in the box elder stake of zion with whom I 1 could trust my life said that dro bro burt was one of that number ile he was chosen by lorenzo snow as a member of the first high council organized here elder james olsen 2nd and counselor in the same quorum had been acquainted with the deceased since 1853 arid and during the past throe three years hai had been associated with him in tie the presidency of the high priests quorum related how during the last few weeks while brother burt had been too ill to leave his room his counselors coun set had gone to him for advice and upon each occasion he had been bee so anxious that they should extend to the brethren his love elder william an old neighbor recounted his acquaintance with deceased he said bro burt was a minute man always on hand when needed we were together in the echo canyon war and also in the nauvoo legion we both came to brigham city in 1855 alexander burt of salt lake city had worked under the direction of deceased in the scottish mission and took occasion to praise in the highest terms the work done by him in that count country ry he said it was characteristic of bro hurt burt that nothing gave him such intense pleasure as working for the up building of the kingdom of god prest lucius A snow spoke briefly of the good character of deceased and exerted the children to follow the excellent example of their father bishop Mel mcmaster laster remembered bro burt from the time he reached the 1 salt lake valley and bore testimony to the truthfulness of the good things spoken of him bishop brigham wright told of tiie the sufferings and privations that the deceased had undergone while the crusade was being waged ile he said that bro burt had spent one entire summer in the mountains east of his bp wrights home not daring to make his whereabouts known because of the extreme cruelty and persecution heaped upon those who were fugitives for conscience sake the choir sang what voice salutes the startled ear arst 01 oleen N stohl read a chapter from the book of mormon especially especial al ly applicable to the occasion said that he admired the great force of character the courage the strong convictions and the loyalty of bro burt he was a spiritual man in fact what some people call a visionary man and he did in reality enjoy the blessings which the gospel brings the fruits of the spirit of god apostle rudger clawson said prest joseph F r smith was very anxious to have been present but owing to circumstances cum curn stances over which he had no control was vas compelled to remain absent ills his heart is with us however and we can be sure of his sympathy upon this occasion bro burt has gone to meet a host of friends on the other side as the headstones in the cemetery abundantly testify our loss is his gain I 1 have written down the names of many who were intimately associated with him in his lifetime and who enjoy his entire confidence
