Show I Ben Lomond Beacon, Jan. State Advisory The Council for Vocational Education just released its annual report for 1977. It is factual an attractive, ..iocumentation of how well the education system in the Utah, specifically vocational education system, is meeting the needs of students to prepare for employment and the needs of employers for skilled personnel. Vocational enrollments at both the high school level and at the colleges and universities are up, while total enrollments have stabilized or actually declined. Enrollments at the technical colleges, especially, have increased and are almost double what they were six years ago. Child abuse gets national attention Swallow hard before you read this statistic: Two million children a year are so physically abused by their parents that these youngsters statistically qualify as being battered. Heres another: Twenty million American children live with an alcoholic parent. And another: In Maryland alone, 6,000 parents went to court to give up responsibility for a teenaged child. Here in Utah, there is a law that makes it mandatory for us to report physical abuse of children to authorities. the law presumably is not By physical abuse, referring to a slap on the wrist by a mother who has just witnessed her son punch a hole in the wallboard with a baseball bat. Child abuse can be almost incredible cruelty. We are told of children coming to school with cigarette burns many of them-o- n their bodies. We also learn of youngsters with bones broken by parents. You should know that the Utah law provides that any person making a report of child abuse shall have immunity from civil or criminal actions in court. Heres how the law says you should make a report of child abuse: An oral report shall be made as soon as possible by telephone or otherwise, and shall be followed by a report in writing to the local city police or county sheriff or office of the division of family services. The reports will contain the name and address of the minor, if known, and any other information the person making the report believes might be helpful in establishing the cause of the injuries and identity of the perpetrator. School nurses say these battered or neglected children may be found in every economic level, social status, family, race, creed or grade in school. Getting something done about child neglect or abuse usually starts with someone making a report. Fortunately, the law is designed to protect the child and those who seek the childs protection. the chief executive officers of the Board of Regents and the Board for Vocational Education (Terrel H. Bell, Walter D. Talbot, Donald Holbrook and Joan Burnside). The quotes report Governor as Matheson saying: We are one of the fastest growing states in the nation. Job opportunities are expanding, and our natural population increase will not meet the needs for workers as we move into the 1980's. The best informaton indicates that by 1986, almost half the new jobs will be filled through Most of the 40,000 new jobs each year will be in areas for which vocational education prepares people. It is my goal as Governor to ensure that Utahns will have sufficient training opportunities to compete for betterthe higher-skillepaying jobs as they develop. To achieve this end, vocational education will most certainly play a more substantial role in our total education process. Job prospects in Utah are excellent, especially for those with vocational skills. Data compiled by the Advisory Council shows that there are more job openings for skilled people than there are skilled people available. The number of students completing vocational universities, the private programs from the high schools, the colleges and vocational the institutions, area centers and skill centers, and the apprenticeship programs is not Beard contest complete The Boys Association at Weber High School have chosen the winners of the beard growing contest. Council An Advisory survey of a large number of Utah employers indicates that they have many unfilled job openings because they are not able to locate a of sufficient number qualified applicants. Employers indicated they have had to hire people from out of state to fill many of their skilled jobs. Further, the employers indicate education. Yet, for example, there are many more jobs available in the vocational area than there are in the professional area. The Advisory Council has contended for several years that neither Utah Technical College at Provo nor Utah Technical College at Salt LAKE CITY during the next one to three years, most of their job openings will be in the area which vocational for education prepares people.
