Show 74 ANTI-POLYGAM- Defiance to the Government. In case any of our readers ima- gine that the Edmunds Bill is going to accomplish the downfall of polygamy, or that the Mormons have any idea of obeying the laws which they have so long and persistently defied, we append some extracts from sermons delivered at the quarterly meetings in different places during November last. In Manti, a number of the high priests were present from Salt Lake Oity, Apostle George Teasdale, we quote from the Deseret News of Dec. 1st, the Mormon Church organ addressed the conference. Head from Doctrine and Covenants, page 310. Exhorted each one to look own ways; each well to his set his own house in order; by so doing we will save Zion. Said if any were in ignorance in regard to the principle of plural marrmje the fault must certainty rest with themselves. Referred to men having women who were dead sealed to them as wives, and believing they were fullfilling the law, but had never lived in that relationship. President George Q. Cannon, said there are none of us who can plead ignorance as an excuse for not obeying any law of God; if any of us should learn that we could not obtain celestial glory, there is no doubt we should feel sorrowful and much troubled. It is true we cannot conceive a telestial or terrestial glory, much less a celestial glory, without it is revealed to us; but there are certain principles that have been revealed, of them we cannot plead ignorance. The offer of celestial glory is for the whole people if they will accept of it on the terms on which it is offered, that is, by keeping every law that God gives to them. At Mount Pleasant, the good brother who was deputed by the priesthood to exhort the people as to their duty spoke as follows: We must put our families in order; fathers must look afier their families. If they have one, twenty or a hundred wives, they must look after them all the same. The husband must lead, the wife follow. In one instance, one of our best Latter-daSaints called his wife back when she was about to cross the street before him, and made her foly low him. Itisjier place to be subject to him, and no good mother in Israel will complain. We must put ourselves in order; we must obey the laws of the Holy Priesthood. I read from the revelation itself: You must obey the law, and get yourselves ready. This is the law The requiring plural marriage. revelation says we must enter into plural marriage and if we dont we will never be exalted in the world to come. We must get ourselves in order, organize our quorums and enforce this law if we want to be saved. Congress has passed laws persecuting us; laws forbidding potells us lygamy. President Taylor we must obey the laws of God. Congress can pass all the laws they want to pass; the Commissioners can suggest all the marriage laws they want to, but we will obey the laws of the Holy Priesthood, not STANDARD. Y The laws of the withstanding. priesthood are the laws we have to obey! In all the settlements throughout the entire Territory, the same spirit has been manifest at the meetings, and the people have been and are continually urged to obev the law of God, no matter what happens. They are assured that the Government cannot interfere with them, and that God is on their side and will fight all their battles successfally. Can any person who reads the above, not feel that it is time for this great nation to stop its childs play with the greatest evil of the age, and crush it at once and so effectually that it can never lift its brazen head again.
