PROVIDENCE YES - TFRDAY AND TODAY I In the early spring of 1859 a few families from Salt Lake and Weber counties settled on a small Creek, creek, known as Spring Cache side of bn east the situated valley just south of Logan river. In November of , the same year, Apostles Orson Ilyde, Ezra T. Benson and Bishop Peter Maugh-a- n organized a ward "containing about 25 families? ordained Robert H.' Williams as bishop, and named the place Providence. As many Indians were roaming about the valley, and they did not appear very friendly, it was thought best for the people to gather together in a fort for selfprotection. On one occasion a small band of Indians camped near by, and it was reported they had a white child in captivity. About that time a company of soldiers arrived from Salt Lake City, and word was sent, asking the Indians to give up the child Instead of doing so.j they moved up into the canyon, thinking to escape. The soldiers went after them. A skirmish occurred, and the Indians surrendered Bear Hunter, the chief, was. taken prisoner, but soon released, and the soldiers returned to Salt Lake City with the white child. That the Indians occurrence made more ugly than ever. They became so insolent the settlers were compelled to feed them all the time, which worked a great hardship, as the white people had been unable to raise much food prod- . 1:0 The Utah-Wyomi- ng Consolidated Oil Co. For years the pioneers endured many hardships, Tiving ever in dread of the Indians. Then fo several successive years the farmers witnessed the destruction of their crops from grasshoppers, 1 indering materially the rapid improvement of the place, many of the citizens having to go else-here :n order to obtain sufficient means to sustain their families from year to yeae. or until he ceased grasshoppers 'oming. The people later went to expense to construct reservoirs to retain the water from the spring flowing from the base of a prominent bluff east of the village.
