Show I Saunterings H There has been enough variety in the week's H entertainments to suit every one concerned, with H the Commercial club really holding the center H of the stage, though not monopolizing the lime- light. H The new building was formally opened on H Thanksgiving Eve with a reception at which nun- H dreds gathered to inspect the beautiful new quar- H ters of the club. Preceding this there had been a H number of Informal dinners at the club earlier in M the week, and on Thanksgiving day there waB H open house, attended by a great many who had 1 not been able to be present the night before. H Tonight high jinks will be celebrated, and M among other features there will be professional M and amateur vaudeville acts and many surprises M planned by the committee in charge. M On Tuesday evening the dance given by Miss M Virginia Beatty at the Country club and the per- M formances in which the Buskins were seen at the H University club, attracted the members of the M younger set. On Friday night a beautiful dance B was given at the Odeon by Mrs. Samuel Sharp m Walker and Mrs. O. K. Lewis and Miss Lewis. m These evening events, together with the numerous H luncheons and bridge teas of the week, beside the B family affairs of Thanksgiving day, have kept H those socially inclined on the go for seven days H and nights. H H Salt Lake has long needed such a place as the B new building of the Commercial club, and there Is H no question but that the gaieties of the H season will be greatly enhanced by the possibili-H possibili-H ties for entertainment In the new building. There H Is not a club between St. Louis and the coast so B beautifully equipped and convenient for enteral enter-al tainments of all kinds, and the principal affairs of H the holidays will be held in the new quarters. H H Mrs. Pedar Bruguiere, formerly of San Fran- B cisco and a little later of Salt Lake, and during H the past few months a Newport sensation in the H smart set there, has been having some corre- H spondence with Colonel W. D. Mann of "Town H Topics," or rather Editor Mann has been doing H) most of the correspondence. The last issue of H that journal of New York society contains a page H; and a half giving the letters in detail. It seems K that Mrs. Bruguiere alleged that she had given a H cheque to one of the "Town Topics" reporters in H order that certain articles which connected her H J name with that of W. P. Burden migut be omitted H in the future. According to Colonel Mann, no H less than half a dozen letters, which are repro- H duced, were written to Mrs. Bruguiere, Mr. Burden H c and her attorney, Mr. L. Barton Case, in an en- H deavor to find out whether an employee had re- H ceived the money. A letter was then written to H Robert R. Rowe, the man who is charged with H) receiving and endorsing the cheque, asking for Hi an explanation, and as he refused to reply, he H was discharged from the editorial staff. During H i.the past six or eight months Mrs. Bruguiere and H liner conquests have been freely commented upon B an the New York paper, but the last number is H really a Bruguiere edition, and one which should H contain much of interest to her local friends. A large number of the H girlhood friends of Mrs. Walter Lewis were pres- H ent, as well as the present-day younger set, invited H in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Sowels. Hll H A beautiful affair of Tuesday evening was the H j dance at the Country club given by Miss Virginia Beatty in honor of the Misses Mary and Carey Marshall, daughters of Judge and Mrs. John a. Marshall, who have recently returned from abroad. Mrs. Beatty and Mrs. Marshall assisted in receiving in the rooms at the club, which had been beautifully decorated for the occasion. With Athol Rawlins, Alex Thomas and Fred C. Smith as hosts, "The Buskins" entertained at the University club on Tuesday evening in honor of Kenneth C. Kerr, who departed for Seatttie Wednesday. Two playlets were given under the direction of Miss Auranla Ellerbeck and Mrs. L. L. Savage, and later supper was served in the ladles' dining room. News of the departure of the Fifteenth for the Philippines was contained in the "Washington dispatches the first of the week, and it is announced an-nounced that the regiment will leave here in May, sailing from San Francisco for Manila the latter part of that month. It is with regret that Salt Lakers will see them depart, for they have been here but three years, an unusually short time considering the period that most regiments are allowed to remain re-main at the Fort. They will be succeeded by the Twentieth infantry, one of the finest regiments in the country, which now contains a number of officers of-ficers who were previously in regiments formerly stationed here. On Monday she was the hostess at a luncheon followed by bridge, and on Wednesday at a bridge tea. ( Mrs. Ernest Bamberger entertained at a luncheon lunch-eon at the Alta club on Tuesday, at which a dozen of her friends were present. In honor of their guest, Brigadier General i Wm. A. Bisbee, Mr. and Mrs. Richard A. Keyes Jl entertained at an elaborate uinner at the Alta A club on Thanksgiving day. General Bisbee is on " his way to San Francisco after a trip around the world. Mr. and Mrs. Keyes have also issued invitations invi-tations for a dinner to be given at the Alta club on Sunday evening next Mrs. F. L. Dodge entertained thirty of her friends at bridge on Tuesday, in honor of Aher mother, Mrs. J. L. Kiser, and her sister, Miss Jeanette Kiser of Davenport. Mrs. Dodge was as- sisted by Mrs. R. A. Keyes, Mrs. C. L. Sampson j and Miss Ethel Mount. On Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. James Hogle, a reception was given for the members and friends of St. Mark's cathedral parish. Bishop F. S. Spalding and Miss Sarah Spalding were welcomed wel-comed home after several months spent in the east. fa In honor of Mrs. "Wing B. Allen, Mrs. "W. H. Tuttlo entertained at a F bridge tea on Tuesday. Assisting Mrs. Tuttle were Mrs. M. B. Whitney and the Misses Mildred and Marian Tuttle. Heard at the assembly: "What articles of apparel do you think the ladies are spending the most money on this season?" "Stockings, apparently." It seems that Rosemary Glosz-Whitney-Rose, recently married to ex-Mayor David S. Rose of Milwaukee, is the third wife of that gentleman. Further, that his second wife died less than three months ago, and that Rose did not attend the funeral, as the couple were estranged on account, of the alleged relations of Rose with Mrs. La-verne-Boyd-Hickey, of Chicago. According to the story which comes from the east and the west the friends of the former mayor supposed he was planning to marry Mrs. Hlckey, and his marriage to "The Merry Widow" was a great surprise to them. From Milwaukee comes the story that Rose's first wife divorced him, and that his second NAZIMOVA wife died of a broken heart. Probably a rose by any other name would but what's the use? John Boyd, of Victoria, B. C, is spending a few days here, the guest of his brother, D. McPherson Boyd, at the University club. Mr. Boyd is on his way to Scotland. During the past few days he has entertained at a number of informal dinners. Dr. and Mrs. Wayne Smith, of St. Louis, are J the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dana T. Smith, at the Kensington. Dr. Smith is being welcomed by his many old friends. An interesting wedding of the week was that of Miss Zula Houtz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Houtz, to Joseph Willis Bishop of Boston. The ceremony took place on Sunday. |
