I strongly in hi the church itself The qualities j of an educator were inborn and he devoted every effort of his life to i his calling Native Nati of Germany Ge ny Dr Maeser was born on Jan IS 1 1828 comfortable Karl received his early j education in the public schools of Meis Meissen Hen sen en finishing and graduating from the Dresden normal school in 1848 For a time he was connected with the public schools in Dresden as teacher then acted as a private I tutor in families of or Protestants tants in Bohemia finally return returning returning returning ing to the Dresden Dreaden schools and securing ing the position of or head teacher in the Hie Budig institute While connected with the latter in institution institution he married the tae daughter of or orthe the principal of the normal college who for half balf a century shared his joys joy and ad I sorrows She was also the sister stater of ot Mrs Edward of East Brighton I Iton ton and of Camilla Cobb who was wa waa adopted opted a and raised by Dr Maeser It was in 1855 that Dr Mae Maeser met three missionaries from the Mormon church and embraced that faith being I baptized baptised in the historic bl river rivet Elba Ib by Apostle Richards I Came to America i Shortly Sh afterward Dr Maeser Maer re le resigned resigned signed his position tUon po in the Budig institute Institute I tute and went to London where h I he labored among the German pimple people and succeeded in establishing a banch bi anch of I the Mormon church among amone them He then sailed to the United States land landing landing landi i ing inc at Philadelphia where he was wu kept f as a missionary under President Angus M Cannon Cannoa until the panic of 1967 1857 when he in company with our elders made the trip by foot toot to Virginia In Rich bed he d that position po until June Dr Maeser came to Salt Lake in lift 1 With his hla natural talent for teaching which had Md already manifested itself be he turned t his attention to educational lie he accepted the position of private tutor in the family of President Brigham B kam Young acting as organist for the tabernacle at the tile same me time He lie took charge of oC the Swiss and
