Show A FEMALE HOUSE-THIEF.-Miss Elizabeth Hammond, a young and pretty girl of about 22 was brought to this city, Richmond, Va., to-day, and committed to the State penitentiary to serve out a sentence of three years for horse stealing in Russell county. The fair prisoner belongs to a highly respectable family in that section and is well educated, refined in appearance. And the last person who would be selected as a thief, much less the daring and bold one which she is alleged to be. Miss Hammond is said to have run off with several valuable horses within the past row months. She was detected in one of these forays a few weeks ago, arrested, tried, convicted, and to-day is the occupant of a cell in the State prison. The accused is petite in form, with soft, dark brown eyes and clustering curls, with a face of peculiar attractiveness. This is believed to be the first case where a woman has been convicted on the charge of horse-stealing, and is certainly the only one of the kind that ever occurred in this State. |
