Mrs As Others See It The Devil Is at Work Dick West in Dallas Morning News: He wont get a Pulitzer, but no piece of prose on the riots packs the punch of one written recently for the San Diego Union by Archie Moore, the retired Negro boxing champion. The devil is at work in America, wrote Archie. Snipers and looters, white or black, deserve no mercy. 1 was born in a ghetto, but I refused to stay there. I am a Negro, and proud to be one. I am also an American, and Fm proud of that. Todays young people think they have a hard lot. They should have been around in the 30s when I was coining up in St. Louis. We had no way to go, but a lot of us made it. I became light heavyweight champion of the world. A kid down the block, Clark Terry, became one of the most famous jazz musicians in the world. There were doctors, lawyers and chiefs who came out of that ghetto. Now, heres the best part: u We made it because we had a goal, and we were willing to work for it. Dont talk to me of your guaranteed national income. Any fool knows that this is insanity. Do we bring those who worked to get ahead down to the level of those who never gave a damn? The world owes nobody black or white a living. God helps the man who helps himself. There is more to it, but we picked out for quotation that part about the Great Depression, for a particular purpose. The depression ( 1930-4- ) was horrible, but those who experienced it came out with lasting compensations. They learned, first, that even a penny was precious . . . Second, those who experienced the depression learned the value of a job any kind of a job. You grabbed whatever came along . . . The third compensation well, let Archie Moore say it again: We made it because we had a goal, and we were willing to work for it. You learned that getting ahead demanded courage, work, sacrifice and guts. It was a way of life . . . America has not gone to hell, but this is true: In times of adversity, there are more who are willing to sacrifice and fight because they have to. In times of plenty, there are more who want to take it 1 easy. The tragedy of our slums is not only their filth and ratholes; it is the unwillingness of so many to sacrifice and work to get out of the ghetto. The real devil Archie Moore was talking about is the attitude that lifes blessings are to be served up, like turkey and dressing, on a silver platter. A great society? Billions cant build it if the heart isnt right, the head is lazy and the hands unwilling to dig the solid foundations. Nothing Serious I agree, the school principal said to the doting mother, that your son may 1.3ve a spark of genius. But in my opinion, he also has ignition trouble. Balance Sheet . The way we get the new rules, when a cop pulls you over to the curb he cant force you to divulge the location of the fire. Changing Times. Wall Street Journal. le,,er , ,he President by Paul Harvey I bare here a copy of a letter which was sent to President Johnson from a mother in Syracuse, N.Y. Perhaps the White House ignored it; I cant. Perhaps more than any of us, Mrs. A.P.S. deserves to be beard. I quote: Dear Mr. President: We sit here side by side tonight, numb, defeated, broken, scarcely able to trust ourselves to talk. We an awaiting the homecoming of our son, Andy Jr., from Viet Nam. We cannot sleep. We cannot eat. We are filled to the brim with hurt. Rights vs Responsibilities Our United States Constitution was signed 180 years ago last month. The signing date was September 17, 1787. Under our constitution we enjoy liberties which distinguish our free society from the totalitarian system. We, as citizens, know that with each right there is a responsibility. We are accountable for these responsibilities as a nation and as an individual. Our rights include: This was a day long, long anticipated -The right to equal protection of laws and equal justice in the courts. it was to be a day of a million things to The right to be free from arbitrary search and arrest. say - a day of overwhelming happiness and bitterknow now we never the But will joy. You are, Andy. Duty to practice the principles of good citizenship. for No, no more, no more, no more he died just five days after be wrote that last letter. Yes, Mr. President, we are bitter. If this war had even the dignity and purpose of the war his daddy fought, we could swallow that pain and not complain. But now our boys are orphaned in their own country. Andy had such honest and fine ideals -the old fashioned kind of pride in his country and in his flag. Now I search the faces of my other sons, hardly more than babies, and wonder who goes forth to these unending slaughters next. And X keep thinking maybe it was the $10,000 Rockwell Kent sent to the Viet Cong which paid for the bullets that snuffed out the last breath of our Andy. We are sick, Mr. President, over what is happening to our finest boys in Viet Nam. Why, oh why most they die - while biased laws leave loopholes for the sleazy ones who run and hide and burn draft cards and desecrate their flag? The tears are coming now, Mr. President. I cant see to write much more. But do let me congratulate you on the birth of your precious grandson. We rejoice with you in this, though we will never know the joy of Andys children. Never. Sleep well, Mr. President, though some of us cannot until this carnage is brought up fallscale and all our sons over there are backed up with all our power all the way - or until you get them out of there and bring them home. Thank God, our Andy died still believing you surely would. Goodnight, Mr. President. OF OWNERSHIP. MANAGEMENT AND CIRCULATION (Act of October 23. 962; Section 4369, Title 39. United States Code) .
