from the combined bands greeted the entrance of judge emerson C S varian and the other speakers mr alma hague made a brief speech on the purpose of the meeting and introduced trod hon 0 S varian air varian said it is with exceeding great pleasure that upon the occasion of my first visit to your beautiful and prospering little town responsive to the call to address an assemblage of my fellow citizens upon the glorious principles on which the safety of our nation depends heretofore as you will recognize a discussion of these principles has not found place in this territory it is significant that now we find our fellow citizens meeting together for the purpose of discussing these principles As a republican pure and simple acknowledging my fealty and loyalty to my par ty I 1 stand before you tonight to night to ask your consideration of some of the questions which are now agitating this great people twenty three years ago the republican party in the full tide of its power at the close of the rebellion extended the right hand of fellowship to the democrats of abo south it sent the men back who had been in the army of the confederation to their homes with their horses and their swords to pursue the avocations of peace and year by year extended back to them their franchise and their rights which they have it brought the seceding states into the union and united the people in one common cause the policy of the republican party was pursued from that time until four years ago and no man questioned that policy at thai time confidence was so well rooted that it was said there was no issue dividing this people there is nothing that can separate us but all at once the cry was raised that the republican party had accomplished its end it had outlived ita usefulness and it is time we buried it out of sight and so it was that the american people realizing as 1 believe what had really been accomplished by the republican party enough of that party and it took but few failed in their allegiance er cleveland was elected president of the united states the speaker here went on to explain the manner in which cleveland won the day laying all the blame on one man a representative of one of the greatest journals of the age he said the chosen voice of the republican party of the empire state who had betrayed the cause which he had sworn in hia early manhood to defend this man the speaker went on to say was enabled to lead enough from the banners of the party to tarn the election in that great state and admit tha democratic party to jump into power an unknown man with an unknown record as a leader the men who came into power with grover cleveland were in large numbers thoo who biad fought in tho army of iho confederation men whose principles beio and are antagonistic to the ery system of american independence and freedom and it is believed that the masses of the laboring and manufacturing element will not submit to their continuance onti nuance m power for twenty years our industries have been protected until cities and villagers rs havu been built manufactories manu factories increased inci eased in number the laboring people have secured comfortable homes schools have been built and the children of the nation generally been given a libel al education and it is not believed that any set of men who bear the name of americans will undertake to strike down that protection but it seems that there was lurking always beneath keeping it away from the people a deadly foe and a new president was elected nothing was said of this poison beneath until the president af the united states who to be an american delivers a message short but plain to the american congress asking that body to strike down the tariff and level the wall that had protected the american people for twenty years and biad made america for america he said to congress you must admit the products of foreign countries into aliis country free or under such reduced earitt that alie laboring man the poor man and every citizen may bo enabled to get what he needs for his family at the lowest possible coat this was a direct pull at the system which has received the sanction of this people on and off fort over years and steadily for the last twenty three years during which last tim the nation has as it never did before the speaker then went into a history of the organization of the ways and means committee of the present congress and derided many of their actions ho then alluded ia the wool tariff and its effects upon and got a chance to ring in thi speech nepal for Neph itea the comity for clr people of tho county the territory for the citizens of the territory and america fur americana to good effect we nr marching along with rapid strides we havu the proudest and t most beautiful women the loveliest ind fairest children anil AC hii i beat soil the best climate the beci country and the best government eliat ever was or ever will be and why na protect it great app the speaker then with a lengthy derision of alie state of free trade england and a few prophecies as to the outcome of the november election closed his remarks the combined bandy then played a selection mn sutherland SD was paced he said it is one of alie cardinal principles of every good can to rise ati every opportunity and give a reason for the hope that wag in him I 1 am proud to do BO now r heard a democrat bay not long ago tbt we prided onra elvea upon the descent of carrigon Har rigon while the brats prided themselves upon the ascent of cleveland now I 1 think that under tha harmand ruin of the country that he has wrought if that democrat had been decent enough to assent that it was better to be proud of a glorious family than to glory in the work of a man antagonized to american progress he would have been more correct of course we are proud of harrisons ancestors and why should we not be the speaker then recounted a few noted incidents of a few of these ancestors and spoke of the personal record of the republican nominee in reference to his connection with the war of 1861 2 and 3 and solicited several rounds of applause he then said he had a stanza from a poet of recent fame he would quote which was aa follows our ben fought to keep the union from falling over with steadfast heart he did his part but where oh where was grover history does not tell us where he was but the general impression is that he was there fighting all right by proxy and when that proxy came home grove r fought to him the speak erthen went on to the mills bill and said that it protected the southern industries dus tries such as the producing of sugar and rice and placed the northern pro duets such as wheat lumber and wool on the free list he said this discrimination was made because the south cast the democratic yote and the north cast the republican vote he also told a few stories which took well A G sutherland who was greeted with hearty applause was introduced and said I 1 am going to talk ten minutes there are three things in my life of which I 1 am very proud I 1 am proud I 1 was born an Engli sliman I 1 am prouder still that I 1 became an american citizen from choice and I 1 am prouder detill that I 1 am a republican without boing poing into the details as to why I 1 was born upon british soil that was an accident anyway or why I 1 became an american I 1 wish to tell you why I 1 am a republican the republican party has always been a fighting party it is now as it hag ever been a party fighting for the liberties of the working man it fought that all men should become as the constitution ution of our great country declared they should become free and equal it declared in thundering tones that the blacks as well as the white people should be free at the point or the musket and bayonet it did all that men could do to declare the principles of the constitution ution as they are when it declares that all men upon american soil shall be free and equal applause now I 1 say that the republican party is a fighting party always has been and I 1 like it I 1 am not much of a fighter myself and dont like to see fighting but when fighting has to be done I 1 like to be in the crowd ahen this nation was trembling in the throes ot apparent dis traitors from every comer of the earth were seeking to destroy the liberties of the amerian citizen the republican party sprung into existence from another party as the fighting party of the united State 3 and declares that every man who treads upon american soil shall be a free man applause republicans we shall let the democratic party have its due have they done anything while they have been in power the man who now presides with all due respect to him is the tion of what republican swords bad to destroy before the man who stands at tho head grover cleveland is the man the democrats are going to vote for but it will make no difference lie will never be elected again the man is exemplifying the bachanan rule why is the republican party honored because it is the only party eliat ha 3 raided tle american citizen so that alie poorest man can pay to the richest 1 I am your equal the republican party said not only in words but by acts that every man who steps upon american boil no matter where he comes from whether lie may be a serf or the pet of a king the moment he steps on american soil and becomes an american citizen lie mchall be free applause bow I 1 arraign alie democratic party and I 1 arraign it at its head I 1 am not going through the details as there are many alio can do that better than I 1 can the head of alie family generally shows what its members are when grover cleveland does certain things in the united states lie intends by his acts and by his stand eliat the democratic party will do the same judge emerson was the next and last speaker and entertained alie people in his usual jocose manner vo would like to have given space forbids after a vote of thanks alie people dispersed while the bands played the star spangled banner the provo delegation and the silver band returned to provo this morning |
