Show The Honor System HE examinations of the first semester semester semes- semes T THE ter are now well over and the Fates have declared their verdict The majority w were re passed a few conditioned and still fewer failed It is generally to that the duty of the college paper is to isto to bring the workers co-workers of the school into a closer bond of unity to call the attention of students to any existing good or evil deserving especial notice to tov to give voice to the complaints or commendations commendations commendations com com- of the majority in the college college college col col- lege those thos who give it its individual stamp or tone And to accomplish this your editors give much of their time every week and trust that our loyal purpose purpose purpose pur pur- pose carries some if ever so little weight To return to the examinations The college is eminently the place t to lay the I I foundation foundation for our future lives lives to pre preT i ipare pare ourselves for the struggle of the world Here in this small college community community community com com- are to be tried the moral lessons lesso so fondly and earnestly inculcated by our our parents and religious guides Yes honor is the subject of my story Here it is that honor must be fostered for we believe that honor is is' is innate in every human soul but is is' developed according to the education and environment environment environment environ environ- ment of the individual From certain underhand communications seen during the recent recent examinations examinations examinations it is ev evident dent that tha some few of our students have been developed in a demoralizing atmosphere It will certainly certainly certainly be to the advantage of the future reputation of the University and to each honorable student of the University if 3 j such students would either reform speedily or be requested to quit our ranks It may ay seem a little thing to toone toone toone one of blunt sensibilities and shallow honor to sign his name to work which r does not b belong long to him but it is laying i ia a frail foundation for the moral structure of his life to be built upon Can we trust the word of such a man or woman And what is there in a life without truth Without it all higher idealistic life is shattered and there remains but a petty materialistic sensuous existence until death conveys him unprepared beyond into the great unknown Goethe has put some most eloquent words into the mouth of Faust as he remonstrates with Mephistopheles against the written com compact pact Have you never feeling li g of being hound to torl to rl the moral code that makes civilization r It is to strengthen this instinct of off f honor that the CHRONICLE has decided 1 fj er uh to lay before its readers the details of in examination which r the honor system r l has already been geen adopted with the most f favorable results in several prominent prominent prom prom- colleges of the United States In all cases where it has been tried it is found that the standard of work has been raised the f feeling eling between professors professors professors pro pro- an and students has been kindlier and in every way has produced an elevating elevating elevating ele ele- influence upon college life Fes' Fes The systems adopted vary slightly in f detail in the different colleges A prominent prominent prom prom- inept system and we think a very good goodone one is as follows The one accused of cheating is summoned summoned summoned sum sum- before a committee appointed for the purpose and nd the evidence carefully carefully carefully care care- fully and impartially examined examine If found guilty he is required at once to c leave the University No excuse is accepted and the sentence is exacted with inflexible severity This hardly happens oftener that once iri in two or three years Violations of the system consist in any attempt to receive assistance from written aids or from any person or his paper or in in any attempt to give i. i assistance Each student is required to i. i state upon his paper before handing it its it itin j in that he has neither given ten nor l f received received received re re- assistance From this simple statement of facts the result can be judged Those who desire to be honorable will continue so without effort the weak will be strengthened strengthened strengthened strength strength- ened and the erring be put out of the way of temptation J We most earnestly urge upon upon the students to seriously consider this question question question ques ques- tion at a general meeting and if it is found to be desired generally lay a petition before the Faculty for their acquiescence 1 o t t T Tr HE HE HEAt At Athletic Athletic Association Association o did I 7 excel l J JJ J- J lent work last year and its members J were greatly benefited especially those that took the tra training n ing in physical culture at the gymnasium For the small sum of ten cents a month three l lessons each j week were given under competent in- in in 1 But as the expenses of the j Association ran higher than its income j jit i it became involved in debt to the J amount of several hundred dollars At Atthe Atthe 1 the of this beginning school year it was j decided by the active members of the Association that the old debt should be I paid as with the j money realized from the Thanksgiving j ball and football game and from a small j 1 amount made at the Martha Washington Washing 1 Washing Washing- i ton tea But there is still an outstanding j ing debt and consequently the officers of th the Association are not able to provide the members with the desired advantages advantages advantages for physical training This is is s certainly a deplorable condition and it may be thought by some that it can not be helped Perhaps it cannot but it might be if the students would only join the Association and pay their monthly dues Last year the benefits derived derived j from 1 payi paying g fifty cents initiation f fee e and ten cents a month dues were so immediate late and direct that students ts paid up promptly rather thin than lose the privileges privileges privileges of mem membership p. p This year the immediate rewards of membership cannot cannot cannot can can- not be offered until the Association is in better financial standing The result is that new members are wanting and old ones neglect to pay their dues It is to be hoped that this condition is not due to lack of patriotism it is trusted that it is attributable to nothing worse than thoughtlessness There are five hundred students in the University If all these w would uld join the Association all its its its' debts might be paid in ill a short
