Show My First Ride in a Street Car AFTER a long tedious journey of two hundred miles we arrived at M M at dark just one week from the time tIm we started The little town of M M is only eight miles from the city and a street car connects the two My friend decided to stop over there for a day or two to rest his teams Being anxious to get to m my uncles uncle's u cles cle's I arose early and made my way to the car It was hardly daylight when I reached the car The sight of it reminded me of a picture of New York in my old geography only the horses had not yet been hitched on Soon a man came over to the car with witha a kind of wrench in his hand and I thought he was going to see that all was right before starting As he stepped upon th the front end I asked him if the horses had not yet finished their oats but the only reply he gave me was a abroad abroad abroad broad grin I had no time to think of the impoliteness for at that instant the car started so suddenly that I had trouble to keep my feet under me I believe now that he put on extra force for my sake I went v inside and sat down to hide my embarrassment I did not keep my seat long for my curiosity was too highly aroused I stepped to tofte the back platform to observe The man with a cap on went inside and the gentleman by me took his book of fares out of his vest pocket Thinking he lie meant for me to buy my ticket I reach reached d him a quarter saying II Give me a ticket I to S Salt al t Lake j He informed me with a suppressed sm smile lIe that I should pay the conductor my fare This I did when he came to f me H He e gave me a c check h eck as He lie did 4 2 each one in the car After reading mine carefully two or three times I f w fastened it in my hat which I had taken off when a lady had entered the car J 4 Everybody seemed to eye eje me closely closely- x more mon than I wished for I assure you ou W We e had now entered the city and I g watched for the name of my street At last I observed a name which agreed with the one on my card I turned to F see if the conductor was going to give the signal for the car to stop I thought though t he must have forgotten so I reached up and pulled the rope as I had seen him do so many times since we started The bell sounded rather louder than usual and as I started out at the front door the conductor stopped s w II Here for that fare me saying pay you rung up I He had a hard task to a. get me to see what I had done but as soon as I saw I paid and stepped into the street but not without feeling that the man was too severe with me i I 1 had not gone far down the sidewalk when the thought struck me that I had a left my grip in the car I turned 4 quickly and started back on the run nearly upsetting an old lady in my haste She managed to catch herself but I did S 7 and gave me a terrible scowl not stop By the use of the herd-boy's herd art I succeeded in stopping the car t Out of breath I came ame up to the conductor tor and was telling him what I had left as I noticed the lost grip on my back where I had strapped it before leaving my friend A burst of laughter came j from the the- car as it moved on ont and I j E E I Iy J y y vouch that if the earth had opened then K and there and swallowed me I should t have deemed it it a favor I hung my t head and walked off wondering what next would happen t- t R.
