Show Honor to Whom Honor is Due BELOW we publish a letter from Mr John Seaman a member of the last Legislative council We Ne do not of course agree with all his statements but desire to give all a fair bearing so that mistakes may be avoided Editor of the University Chronicle Dear Sir In your issue issue of the is an editorial editorial editorial edito edito- rial under the heading A Call to Action in which you censure both political parties in the Legislature for the action taken on the appropriation for the University You say prominent members of both political parties parties parties par par- ties have openly declared themselves opposed to its support sup sup- port Applying this to the members of the Legislature which seems to be your purpose purpose purpose-is is altogether wrong There were no Democrats so far as I am advised who desired or wished to withhold a proper support of the University When the appropriation bill was under discussion in inthe inthe inthe the council Mr Williams of your city off offered red an amendment increasing the amount for Cor the University from 1 to The amendment was argued at length and very ably fully endorsing tt tie He e work of the institution pleading with the council not to lend its aid aidin aidin aidin in thus throttling the good work that had been so nobly fostered for so many years under circumstances the most trying Every Democrat in in that council spoke for fora a more liberal appropriation and he voted as he spoke Elsewhere in your paper you speak of the deadly hostility of the country members of the Legislature against Salt Lake City Only existing my dear sir in your imagination If fealty to the University is to be taken as friendship for or Salt Lake City an and opposition to it as hostility then I charge you to count noses and with only one or two exceptions your friends were found only among the country members Salt Lake City had three members in that thai council only one of whom Mr Williams pleaded your cause canse or voted to do you good Others were there by the suffrage of some of the precincts in Salt Lake County but their voice and votes went against you I am free to say that had the members from Salt Lake City used their influence for you with as much zeal and earnestness as they manifested for bounties and other less important legislation the article A call to Action would not have been written The start to undermine the University that it might totter to its fall in my judgment judgment judgment judg judg- ment did not have its origin in any political caucus but butin butin butin in the press of your own city and unfortunately it controlled controlled controlled con con- trolled the members from Salt Lake City with the exception exception exception ex ex- as above noted In conclusion let me again remind remind remind re re- mind you that your friends are in the rank and file in inthe inthe inthe the country and dont don't try to estrange them by unfriendly criticism or imaginary causes for as yet we are all for Utah and her honored institutions not hemmed in or bound by city limits or county lines Be Be just though the heavens fall Very Respectfully Yours for justice only f. f JNO SEAMAN View March 1894 II Be Be just though the heavens fall We can do no better than to take up and re-echo re our correspondents correspondent's quota quota- tion The article he cri criticises was not written without due deliberation and a knowledge of the facts in the case What was said concerning the sentiments sentiments sentiments senti senti- ments expressed by leading politicians of both parties is true and therefore just With all honor to those legislators legisla legisla- tors who stood bravely for the true in interests interests interests in- in of the people we say that the predominant sentiment in the late legislature legislature legislature legis legis- lature was opposed to the interests of higher education in Utah We have r ample evidence to show that the course pursued with regard to this and other institutions the result cf was pre con political plans and that the position position position tion of the the- the political political press in this city was dictated from the respective political cen centres tres Our correspondent may not be fully in accord with the leaders of his party we hope for his own sake he is not and for the sake of the people of our territory at large we hope there are many others who will II Be Be just though the heavens fall and in spite of the menace of the party lash What the CHRONICLE said regarding the feud between the country members and Salt Lake City however requires explanation The hostility was on both sides and because of this mutual hostility hostility hostility hos hos- it was impossible to locate the combined University and College in inthis inthis inthis this city Many members were pledged to vote for their union in Logan and these were of course opposed to union in Salt Lake But we do not condemn the motives of such members what we wedo wedo wedo do most emphatically condemn is that spirit so plainly manifested during the late session of the Legislature which made the interests of education subservient subservient subservient to political poEtical aims Honor to whom honor is due We mention no names nor nor do we accuse any particular party We have the facts to substantiate our statements and feel that we could not have said less without proving remiss in our duty to those whose interests we def defend nd And finally we have no quarrel with the rank and file of the country nor nordo nordo nordo do we believe that in proclaiming against political intrigue we are attacking their interests Our are from the rank and file of the country brave true-hearted true young men and women most of them poor in the wealth that is measured by dollars but rich in true patriotism and determination who are doing their best in the face of infinite difficulties to work out the destiny of our future State |
