Show TEACHERS TEACHER'S AND By Supt Ch Chas M. M Iverson The salaries of the teachers of Duchesne School District seem to furnish a target for the tax tax- payer pay pay- er in tills this county who has not made a careful investigation into the question of just how the tax dollar is spent for school pur pur- poses In the first place the largest single division of expenditure listed listed listed list list- ed in our oUI school budget is for Instruction instruction instruction in In- purposes This means that the salaries of f the teachers constitute this major item of ex ex- pense The as adopted for forthe forthe forthe the current school year sets aside aside aside a- a side for this purpose With our 74 regular teachers this means that on the average 1 each one including principals and high school teachers gets 1000 I 00 per year To many persons this appears to be excessive yet when the cost of preparation for I teaching is reckoned It appears that the amount is not out of pro pro- portion The beginning teachers in this county is started at a salary of per month With an eight month term such person receives Surely no tax payer would object seriously to a salary of this amount being j paid aid a teacher teach teach- er who has had at least two years of work and holds a valid certificate for teaching in this Continued on last page TEACHERS AND THEIR SALARIES Continued from page 1 state A salary schedule was one of the thc principal subjects for or discussion discus discus- slon sion at the last board meeting It tt was the sentiment of the members members members mem mem- bers at that time that it would be unfair to ask a certified teacher teach teach- er to begin work in this district at a salary lower than per month Just as there Is need for in increased increased In- In creased pay for Increased efficiency efficiency efficiency ency and experience there must be he added increments to this as the teacher makes advance advance- ment The task of making up a consistent consistent con con- salary schedule Is no small piece of work The facts at hand must be handled regardless of J consequences There is a definite sum of money to be distributed among the various teachers in such a manner that each gets a square deal according to ability ability abili abili- ty experience and certification Perhaps some facts regarding this district as compared with other districts of the state may be of value at this point From available figures the cost per student student student stu stu- stu- stu dent In Duchesne District for teachers' teachers services per census child for 1931 1030 was 2400 This is the lowest In the state slate for any I district In only two districts in Utah was the average pay for teachers for 1931 1930 below that of Duchesne Only one district In Utah has a greater number of pupils pupils pupils pu pu- pils per teacher on the census basis than has Duchesne The average in our county was 39 last year It is over 41 this year In view of the above facts It seems rather unfair to ask for any great slashing of teachers' teachers salaries for the coming school year The Duchesne Board of Education Education Education tion can appreciate the true situ situ- They feel that there must be strict and arid rigid economy practiced practiced practiced I all along the line Une These board members are your They arc are all tax payers payers payers pay pay- ers in this district and with butone butone but butone one exception they all aU have children children children chil chil- dren in school It seems to be the sentiment of these men that there must be some further adjustment of the salaries of teachers They however however however how how- ever are arc facing the facts from very consistent view point and andare andare andare are opposed to any great tion Ion The board has no dark secrets regarding the school money and how It Is spent It is the desire of every member that the money money i shall be spent to the best possible j advantage and that Duchesne county shall continue to render the maximum amount of or service for the school children of this district |
