Instead of several captains and lieutenants to divide responsibility and - direct musical attack at several places,- there is but one drum major leading the march to the footlights. The best artistic success, whether operatic or dramatic, are where contrasts are made stronger by comparative work, well balanced, and in the hands of several. True, there is room for only one big comedian in A Royal Rogue there is no reason, however, why one man should appropriate all the dramatic tinsel and keep in his vest pocket the operatic snuff box. Mr. Jeff De Angelis, n his latest musical venture, fully sustains the reputation he has already acquired he ds one of Americas brightest comic opera stars. Few, indeed they are, and in the words of the kindergarten ditty, Up above the world so high ah, so very high! The scenery and costumes in A Royal Rogue form an optical, menu sufficient to satisfy the opera glass cravings. of. an epicure. Mr. De Angelis and his superior company appear again today and tonight. forget-me-not- s, . During the week a great many people have been "Hunting for Hawkins at the Grand. The comedy derives its plot from the mistakes which are caused in taking one man for somebody else. This idea of mistaken identity has been responsible for many comedies though not the exact reason for "Why Smith Left Home, yet it had considerable to do with his neighbor, Mr. Jones, and what' happened to him. Just Mr. why Mr. Brown is mistaken forSand-croft, Jones, or Mr. Hawrkins for Mr. is left more to imagination than the details of explanation. Mr. Kearney as the elusive Hawkins does some clever work his comedy efforts are quiet and refined. He succeeds in being almost everywhere without falling into hands ever reaching for him or being hit with a policemans club. In the first act the genial Hawkins starts out to give everyone a run for his money and keeps up the pace to the last. Although Hawkins is a pretty fast fellow, yet his velocity does not outclass the nimbleness of Mr. Grant as Toucham. Toucham and his "I .could use five, caught the town last Monday the brokers on Second South have used it in their quotations ever since. Mr. Melville as Dr.Winkelstein walks through .the play breathing a Teutonic atmosphere tremulous with gutteral explosives. Mr. Harold as the Wall street broker possesses all the monetary dignity of a man overwhelmed with dividends. Miss Conway as the lovesick Georgianna has proved a great favorite. As the lovesick maiden she is the living, breathing, embodiment of Cupid running mad. During the progress of the play a number of special features are Introduced. Mr. Kearney Introduces several clever songs. The monologue specialty of Mr. Grant in the second act is brimful of sparkling witticism. As whirlwind dancers, special mention should be made of Mr. Young and Miss Conway, whose wonderful agility receives tremendous applause. Altogether the play is screamingly funny, well performed and well staged. The comedy will be presented today and tonight. . . ' . ' If the Georgia minstels had put up as good an entertainment as did company H there would have been no roasting of the colored aggregation by the local press. As an amateur production, the militia boys gave a good show none better ever seen in Salt Lake, is the universal verdict. The old familiar first part was a very pretty grouping full dress, everything swell as a Waldorf-Astori- a ballroom. It didnt take long for Kenyon, Holtman, McGraw and Doty, the clever end men, to get the audience worked up to the roaring point. Jokes were fired into the audience with all the rapidity of a Gatling gun doing overtime. Mr. Whitney made a good interlocutor, and assisted the bones and tamboes in getting out of their entanglements.
