Show THE SMELTER CONTROVERSY. Tho Tribune is trying to make the pcoplo outside of Utah bellovo that Joseph F. Smith is antagonistic to tho smelters south of SalfLako and Is Inciting In-citing tho farmers to bring suits against them. This Is done for the purposo of keeping capital from coming com-ing Into this state. It does not hurt Joseph F. Smith. Wherever there aro smelters located In an agricultural district, dis-trict, damage Is Inflicted upon vegetation, vegeta-tion, and lawsuits are the result. Joseph Jo-seph F. Smith has had no more to do with inducing tho farmers of this county coun-ty to bring suits against the smolters, than ho has had with the people of Tennessee, Colorado, Montana and other states who have been doing tho same thing. Tho Tribune is cognizant of this fact and knows that Its statements state-ments aro absolutely false and without foundation. Tho Gentiles of this city understand the situation and are not misled. Tho whole object of the Tribune is to create prejudice against this state by making capitalists believe that Gentile Gen-tile enterprises aro being opposed by tho Mormon church. Will the Tribune pleaso point out ono iota of hostile legislation over enacted en-acted against tho smelters, or any Gentile enterprise by a Mormon legislature? legis-lature? Tho Tribune knows it lies when It' even intimates that the Mormon Mor-mon church, or tho Mormons as a people, peo-ple, aro vindictive against tho smelters. smel-ters. The people who live In the districts dis-tricts damaged by the smelter smoke, irrespective of creed, aro tho ones who want tho smelters either closed down or the poisonous vapors done away with. In tho columns of ono of tho knocker knock-er rags, tho Telegram, Mr. Newhouse is reported as stating that Utah had less labor troubles than any other state; that her laws were conservative, and English capitalists were more anxious to invest their capital here than elsewhere. How does the above correspond with tho Tribuno's statements state-ments each morning? Every person cognizant of tho facts knows that Mr. Nowhouso states the truth. The only hostile legislation over Introduced In-troduced against the smelters or Gentile Gen-tile enterprises, was incited by one of tho biggest knockers and bitterest anti-Mormons in tho state, and being manifestly unfair to tho smelting Industry In-dustry was defeated by a legislature, a majority of whom were Mormons. When did the present manager of the Tribune become converted to tho Idea that It Is a crime to sue a smelter company or any other company for damages? Before ho became United States attorney nlne-tonths of his llrm's business was damage cases against Gentile enterprises. Would Mr. Llppman have refused a case against a smelter, or Gentile enterprise, enter-prise, when ho was out on the road soliciting? Wo think not. Anybody who knows him would never suspect him of it at least. Llppman's specialty was damage cases, that is, getting thorn his partners did tho rest, which boyond doubt was advantageous tn their clients. Tho Denver & Rio Grando, Union Pacific, Oregon Short Lino and San Pedro railroads are all Gentile enterprises, enter-prises, if tho Mormon church Is discriminating dis-criminating against Gentiles why do these railroads incorporate under the laws of this state Instead of ono of the other states they pass through? Tho answer Is simple. Our laws are looked upon as just and our people and courts conservative and fair. Thoro Is no state In the Union In which capital Is moro safe than In Utah. Just think of It, hero we have Can non posing as a champion of purity In tho homo and religion; Kearns, as Old Man High Principle and Chastity, and Llppman, Purity In Politics. Llppman now posing ns an anti-damage suit champion. Will wonders over cease? |
