New part-tim- e assistants include former Beaver High and BYU running back Kelly Smith who last year coached at Bemidji State (Minn.); Andy Thornberg, a Cal Poly San Luis Obispo product who's most recently coached at the College of the Sequoias, (Calif.); Kurt wide receiver Mathews, a last year; and Jeff Kilts, who has coaching experience at a number of Utah and Idaho high schools. Thornberg will work with the defensive secondary; Mathews' assignment will be with wide receivers; and Kilts will coach the defensive line. Spencer. Spencer, a former assistant at the University of Texas and University of Oregon, will serve as offensive coordinator for the Thunderbirds and work specifically with the offensive line. He comes to SUSC from Trinity Valley Community College, Athens, Tex., where he served as offensive coordinator.
