Show The Tfimufcrfiirtf Softball tournament under way by Dan Gowon Wrapping up the intramural season, the spring softball tournament has become a great success. Because the softball tourney has been the most popular of the spring intramural tournaments, the P.E. department has decided to expand softball play with a co-etournament, said Tom Kingsford, intramurals director. At this point in time we have 10 mens teams and four womens teams competing, Kingsford said. This is the highlight of our spring activity. The students love the slow pitch games. Next week the co-e- d softball tournament begins and is scheduled to run through May. The tournament teams will consist of five men and five women. It will be lots of fun for all of the participants, Kingsford said. We hope that the tournament becomes a fun time out in the sun and not a competitive sport. Since this is an offensive kind of game and we want participants to go out and just have some d fun, we dont want just one team to dominate the entire tournament without giving others participants the chance to compete, Kingsford said. Various lettermen students are not allowed to participate because of their athletic ability. Professional officials are being used to make the tournament run smoothly. Schedules will be arranged as time goes on. Games will be played four days a week between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. The late hours are being used to accommodate participants because of classes. We dont try to define the time because we like all of the students to participate, said Kingsford. The rules are also being modified because of the fast pace of the sport. The age group of individuals makes students develop more interest. We expect to see more new faces in the future, Kingsford added. Fans have been showing great interest in the sport and were excited about it. The Thunderbirds are not scheduled to meet the Lady Utes in the first round, but if both win or both lose, they could meet in the second round. SUSC is scheduled to play at Weber State again this and season. The Wildcats met last year. We have probably the toughest schedule ever for an SUSC womens basketball team, Adams said.
