Show THE AUTOMOBILE. Steve Durant Introduces It to Manti. Steve Durant, the well-known traveling salesman, and his automobile, auto-mobile, were the attractions in the city Monday. Mr. Durant was also the first drummer to make the trip through this part of Utah on the bicycle. When Steve glided into town on his horseless machine there was some rubber-necking, and the small boy followed it around with as much delight as he would a Si Perkins street parade. It would not be surprising if in the near future this mode of travel became quite popular among traveling trav-eling men. The saving in expense alone should make this means of travel popular, to say nothing of the convenience. With an "auto" the drummer is strictly independ-' ent. When he has finished his business in a town he gets into the rig, turns on the power and he is off at a 12 or 15 miles an hour clip, and when he gets to the next town his tniiika and grips are there with him. lie has no livery bills or hack fares to pay, and delayed railroad trains do not annoy him. The automobile has a frightful habit of raring up and sometimes killing people, but under ordinary conditions and at a moderate rate of speed they are quite as safe as a trip on the "Nellie Ely Flyer" from Manti south. |
