Show RELIEF FOR FLOOD SUFFERERS. Kansas Legislators Devising Plans for Aiding the People. The Kansas legislature convened in extra session Wednesday to relieve the flood situation In the Kaw valley and its tributaries. Most of the mem bers of both houses are present. Thirty-four flood bill3 were Introduced in the house and nearly as many in the senate. ;,: The session will last or severe days. A big fight has developed ou the question of making an appropriation appropria-tion to relieve the flood sufferers, as well as to authorize the building of bridges. It was expected that Governor Gov-ernor Bailey, in his message, would outline some plan of relief, but he did not, leaving t Iia t for the legislature to handle. The governor says he did not care to dictate in the matter. He regards the Wyandotte county situation as inui serious, anu admits inat ne was prompted by that situation to call the legislature together. He says that, while he is opposed to an appropria tion for the relief of flood sufferers, he did not make protest against It in his message because he believed that the legislature should determine the question without prejudice on account of any view the chief executive might have. The governor, however, does not deny that, he has urged his close friends in both houses to stand pat against an appropriation. |
