Show J The Caterpillars REED SMOOT writes in this sensible fashion to the Provo Enquirer None of us can forget the horrible sight and great loss of last summer and I am sure none want to witness it again this summer I refer to those awful caterpillars caterpil-lars that destroyed most of our fruit crop and made our garden towns look as though fall had visited us in midsummer Now the only way for us to prevent them from being as bad if not worse than last summer is for all of us to unite in trimming trim-ming all of our trees both shade and orchard and be sure to burn the trimmings trim-mings for on them the chrysalis rings are laid and it will not be more than three or four weeks until they begin to develop into caterpillars if not destroye d I have noticed on my lot that the Chrysalis Chry-salis are not only laid on the small twigs ofthe trees but on the currant bushes and all small shrubs There is no use for anyone any-one or any half dozen parties trying to exterminate them from their orchards as they travel from place to place at the rate of about three feet per minute so you see they can travel a block or so in avery a-very short time What it wants is a united effort on the part of every person both old and young Parents claim there is nothing to do for their boys Now boys can trim these twigs off from trees and shrubs as well as a man for you must understand the chrysalis is not laid around the large limb but only on the small twigs and a boy can trim them off with a good pocketknife or priming knife It would pay parents to offer a small reward re-ward for each dozen twigs with the chrysalis chry-salis on and thereby create an interest their children to look close after them for every one missed means at least 200 caterpillars Also take the liberty to suggest sug-gest to our City Fathers and ask them if it would not be a good policy to issue an order and make it compulsory for each and every owner to trim or have trimmed all his shade and orchard trees and to burn the same at time of trimming or would it be asking too much for the Council Coun-cil to offer a small I bounty for each 100 twigs with the chrysalis on |
