Show I Free IMdcs for the Chicago Police CmcAoo July Notwithstanding tho riotous demonstrations yesterday afternoon the west division street railway company I sent out thirtytwo of its cars At 730 this I morning on Madison Randolph Lake and i Van Buren streets the lines of cars are all I well guarded by from six to eight policemen riding on each car while the streets are patroled by a large reserve force Tho early downtown cars are all well patronized ladies and working girls constituting the bulk of passengers Outwardly everything is quiet along the several car routes crowds not being permitted to assemble Car driver Wallace Chaffee who was assaulted by tho mob last evening is at the county hospital in a precarious condition V Eight persons have been arrested for participation par-ticipation in the disturbances yesterday afternoon In the meantime residents of the west division are dependent very largely upon express wagons and other improvised conveyances by which to reach the business portion of the city and are compelled uniformly uni-formly to pay ten cents for fare CHICAGO July 7A conference between the street railway officials and the strikers occurred this afternoon at which a proposition proposi-tion was made to the strikers on behalf of I i the company to which a reply is to be returned re-turned at 7 oclock this evening It is thought this will be the means of terminating terminat-ing the strike |
