Show = M c WHAT WAS IT FOR A 1 Series of SubRosa Meetings by the Ministers of this City I has been whispered fpr some time past that a series of meetings of a semi political nature was being held by the ministers of this city but no one except the ministers I themselves seem to know the exact na i ture and purpose of the exac I purse gatherings and all efforts of tho DEMOCRAT man to pump the ministerial participants have been fruitless From what meagre information informa-tion was gleaned from the outside the reporter surmised that the object of the meetings was to prepare an endorsement endorse-ment of certain Federal officials in this Territory and petition the incoming administration ad-ministration to retain them but the fact that one of the meetings was held at the ffouse of Governor Murray indicates that he was not included among those to be endorsed A DEMOCRAT man called on Bishop Tuttle the chairman of these meetings on Monday for the purpose of learning the details of the movement Bishop Tuttle stated that the object of the meetings meet-ings had not been accomplished but that everything would be consummated at a meeting to be held on the following Thursday yesterday and it would be best to wait until that time The reporter re-porter therefore called again this morning morn-ing Everything is finished and the matter i ended said Bishop Tuttle But nothing can be given t newspapers I requested permission of the association last night t give the DEMOCRAT detailed account of the proceedings but a resolution resolu-tion to the effect that nothing should be given the newspapers was passed I gven can therefore give you no information I there any reason why the matter should be kept secret Is it not something some-thing of interest to the public 1 Yes it is a matter that concerns the public and I see no reason for withholding withhold-ing it but that is the determination of the meeting and of course I would not justified in disregarding their expressed wishes A gentleman who is on the outside of the ministerial circle but who claims to know something about these meetings meet-ings assured a DEMOCRAT representative this morning that their object was not to petition President Cleveland Cleve-land for the retention of any officials but was simply to endorse the course of Judge Zane and Prosecuting Attorney Dickson and assure them of the hearty sympathy of the clergy The fact that many of the ministers of this city who participated in these meetings are believed to be men who would not stoop to use their ecclesiastic ecclesi-astic influence hi support of any movement move-ment of a political nature leads to the belief that tie latter theory as to the object ob-ject of the meetings is the correct one Why not give the proceedings publicity The public is interested and the clergy have surely not been doing anything they are ashamed of |
