Show THEY WILL SOT PAY THE SCALE Iron manufacturers Shut Down on the Demands of the Amalgamated Amal-gamated Association CINCINNATI June 1The situation here among the iron manufacturers is slightly that of following lead of the Pittsburg manufacturers as in concert in deciding as they have done not only not to sign tho scale as presented by the the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers but also to demand a reduction from the present scale of wages As neither side has yielded and the contract year has expired all the mills in this vicinity will close this morning There are no exceptional cases such as at Pittsburg and Wheeling where tho demands de-mands of tho workmen will bo complied with and tho shutting dow be general WHEELING W Va June 1 Sunday night all the iron and nail mills in this city and al vicinity shut down for an indefinite time The owners of tho Bellairo rolling mill signed the acnlcr of tu Nniiers Union but it is understood they will not run Other mills refuse to sign the Amalgamated Association Asso-ciation scale or the United Nailers scale Both sides seem firm and a long suspension of work seems inevitable The nail factories fac-tories in and contiguous to Wheeling number num-ber seven including the Mingo Ohio Mills with office here one bar mill two sheet mills and one bar and sheet combined About 2500 men are thrown out of employment employ-ment by the stoppage PITTSBUBO June IThe iron workers strike which will be inaugurated today promises to be almost general throughout the works Five firms in this city have signed tho scale and will continue their mills in operation They are the Eepub lic Iron Company Union mills Wayne Iron Company and Delworth Porter C mnanv The other mills it is expected will close down thus throwing out of employment nearly 100000 men The workmen work-men are cheerful and assert that the strike will be of short duration and that its ending will be favorable to them rOn the other hand the manufacturers appear equally as confident that the workmen will accept their terms before many days have elapsed PmsBUBa June IThe workmen in the i iron mills where the new scale has not been signed went out on a strike this morning Thus far ten out of the thirty eight iron and steel mills in this district have signed but there does not seem to bo much prospect for a general resumption in the near future Among iron manufacturers there seems to be a determined opposition to the terms proposed by the Union and if their utterances utter-ances are in earnest the chances for a speedy adjustment of the difficulty are very small I |
