Proceeding t rThe day has been a disagreeable one and cold but the enthusiasm at the democratic convention has been at fever heat and the best of time has been had by all The convention is well attended the speeches were appropriate and many of them exceptionally good But inasmuch inas-much as so much space is devoted today to-day to the report of Saturday evenings rally and Delegate Hawlins speech THK DISPATCH IS compelled to content itself with giving a very condensed report re-port of the proceedings The convention met at 1030 and effected the following TEMPORARY ORGANIZATION J D Fork D J Thurman of Lehi James Hawley of Springville S R Gushing of anta quinAdjournment was had until 1230 At that hour the convention reassembled reas-sembled and the committee on credentials creden-tials by its chairman 11 0 Kirkwood reported 212 delegates present PERMANENT ORGANIZATION On recommendation of the committee commit-tee the following were elected as permanent per-manent officers J D Irvine president J Boyer and Israel Evans vice presidents John Moore secretary Ed L Jones assistant K G Maeser chaplain THE RESOLUTIONS AND PLATFORM were read by Chairman Wilson and were profusely punctuated by applause and cheers The document will appear ap-pear in full in these columns tomorrow The resolutions adopted a recess was taken until 230 oclock for dinner din-ner which was served by the ladies of the democratic society in the South worth hall AFTER DINNER the delegates began to again gather in the county courthouse In the morning morn-ing the room was crowed but other delegates and alternates together with manv outside visiting democrats having hav-ing arrived in the city it was utterly impossible for them to bet inside the building and adjournment was had to THE OPERA HOUSE Sometime was occupied in getting the delegations from the different precincts pre-cincts seated together but it was finally fin-ally accomplished the lower part of the building being well filled There was a very respectable showing of spectators spec-tators in the gallaries and upon the stage were seated the officers of the convention members of the county central democratic committee and several sev-eral ladies among whom were some officers of the womans suffrage association associ-ation out to see what Utah eountvs democrats are to do for them At 3 oclock Chairman Irvine called the convention to order saying that the swelling of the numbers present at the convention to many more than was anticipated is typical of what the result re-sult at the polls in JN ovember will be Getting down to the business of the convention A D Gash arose and in a fervent and eloquent speech placed the name of S R Thurmtin before the convention as a delegate to the state constitutional convention Seconded hv SliriniVillH and others Mr Thurman was v nominated by acclamation John P Jones of Spanish Fork then nominated Wm Creer Mr Greer was nominated by acclamation acclama-tion D T Thurman of Lehi named A J Evans Mr Evans was nominated by acclamation accla-mation Sam King of Provo pleated before the convention the name of Dr Karl G Maeser The manner in which the name was received cannot be described in cold type To say that he was nominated nomi-nated by acclamation is putting it mildly Every man in the house arose and in a loud and long shout seconded the nomination and when the vote was taken the three cheers and a tiger that was given him must have warmed the dear old heart of the venerable gentleman He was picked up by a dozen or more delegates and carried bodily to the stage and then asked to speak He said he had been struggling all his lite to be deserv ng of such an honor as had been bestowed upon him He had often rejoiced in the hearty welcome he had received in all parts of the territory from his students i ow to hear and feel that welcome and warm repeated re-peated and seconded by this body of men which ia a representative body ot be parents of his students in this 1 county pleased him more than he could I i aiy Dr Maeser then launched out in an able but short speech which showed plainly that he knew and realized full well the ties that dutips hpfore him as a member of the constitutional convention conven-tion The name of Edward Partridge was placed before the convention by T J Patten and on motion of Walter Scott the rules were laid on the table and M Partridge was nominated by acclamation accla-mation Elmer E Corfman of Provo was nominated nom-inated likewise after an able introductory introduc-tory speech by E A Wilson Other delegates were nominated by acclamation as follow John D Holladay of Sanlaquin a farmer Hyrum Lemmon of Payson un farmer farm-er and a merchant John S Boyer of Springville un farmer and
