Show About Fortunes Left Behind We Would Do It Differently We have read of the disposal of a big banker's wealth which was made in the city of Logan, Utah. And the wonder to'us is how he could "make" so much in so small a community commun-ity ? Something like a hundred and fifty thousand dollars was to be used in building a hospital for the city, if within five years the city could match it with two hundred thousand dollars. This proved to be impossible so the money went to St. Marks Hospital in Salt Lake. Well,, of course, this was fine, but we believe the money , should have remained in Logan and that no impossible strings should have been attached to it. The fortune was made in Logan. It was really the accumulation ac-cumulation of the people's money which had accrued from interest gathered throughout the years, and under the above arrangement not one cent comes back to the home town. We may be foolish in our belief that fortunes made by banking, by insurance, by merchandising and otherwise, .should, in large measure, revert to the people the public, out of whom the fortunes have been made. And while on this subject why do not some rich men arrange to leave some means to the Salt Lake General Hospital Hospi-tal which is doing such wonderful work for the poor and unfortunate un-fortunate of this county. There is not a better place in this community -on which to bestow benefactions. From Adam till now not a single rich man has found a way to take one dollar with him into the beyond. So they should find ways of doing good with it before they pass on. |
