Show from the dully 0 september 7 CITY COUCH an ordinance to unanimously bussed the regular meeting of the city council was held last evening at the city hall there were present all but mayor kiesel aldermen whalan and abny der and councillor douglaas in ane absence of the mayor alderman shilling took the chair the minutes were read and approved the following petitions were read and acted upon PETITION s stephens and brother brick makers afkend the council to so amend the ordinance relating to sidewalks that paving brick might be used in laying walks in place of asphaltum wherever desirable referred to committee on laws K williams and others asked the council to cover up the water mains which had been exposed by the grading of twenty third street lull referred to committee on water supply airs elizabeth williams grandmother williams asked the council to remit her city taxes amounting to 16 owing to her oil age being years old and ber inability to pay them referred to the committee on finance on laws the committee reported on the petition of sirs gibbons for damages sustained by floods on WaB hington that in their opinion the damages were only about 15 and recommended that that amount be paid report adopted in the caad ot sirs E C maygard May oard who claimed by the same flood the committee recommended that be allowed report adopted on the claim of W 0 warren for damages caused by the floods the committee recommended that 10 be allowed report adopted on the petition of mark A luckenbach for a franchise to lay pipes through the streets to carry natural gaa the committee recommended that it be granted under the usual restrictions report adopted on finance the committee recommended that the taxes of henry bailey and 5 of charles taxes be remitted and that the tabea ot robt chapman be not remitted report adopted on streets the committee recommended that the of the utah national bank and others for the opening of an alley in block 26 plat A be granted and that the city engineer be instructed to priced and survey hie proposed street report adopted on the petition of belli griffin the committee reported adversely for the same reason given by them in the previous report on the same subject report adopted on public grounds the committee tendered the follow ing report on the division of union square utah sept the siador and city council of YOOT committee to whom was referred the matter of selling a union square respectfully recommend that the city sell to the highest bidder all of said except that part occupied by the city hall the city reserving the right to reject ancor all bids purchasers to be required to put on euch improvements may be agreed hereafter within a reasonable time this would provide means for a system of sewage also to improve streets and parks in more desirable locations and less valuable vau able and at the same time would be a source of revenue to the city ia the shape of taxes we think that you will agree with your committee that the present condition of three fourths of union square as a disgrace to the city while the earne boalt op with bun ineas blocks would add greatly to the beauty of the city A G read to the council as follow 8 the undersigner undersigned under signed citizens and taxpayers ot ogden noting the action of the recent meeting at which gome forty persons voted in favor of selling union square beg to submit that in our opinion said square ought to be retained for public uses and therefore hereby respectfully enter our protest against its eale then followed twelve double length pages of signatures councillor Blai fidell stated that there were twelve pages of the names and moved it be not read in the council alderman wished to hear all the names and the chair thought there waa but little blaine s before the council and they might as well be read the recorder read the list containing in all signatures councillor corey stated he was op joeed to the sale of any portion of the aquara and in favor of the remonstrance as be thought the city should retain the square for public buildings such as a larger chiy hall or other building he thought that atie grounds would bo needed in the future mr Blai fidell savored the sale As far as public buildings were concerned it weber county wanted a place to put their buildings on let them fair elsh it this waa city property and had nothing to do with the county mr favored the sale it w donld increase the revenue it was a place that was too valuable to be lost business places would not be built around a public square As it is now we cannot improve the for eral bearg I 1 dont think he city will ever want all ot or public grounds the grounds are large enough for years to come and when too small we might sell them a portion of this at a nominal figure air was of mr griffins opinion but be a amount ot land should be retained for public purposes such as a postoffice post office and others the remainder he ft as la favor of H by A chy council of ogdan wy u SECTION 1 it shall be unlawful for any obe within the limits of ogden city to sell or furnish any malt vinous or spirituous liquors to any person in the auditoriums lobbies or boxes of any theatre melodeon museum circus or caravan or place where any farce comedy tragedy ballet opera or play is being performed or any exhibition hibi tion of dancing jungling jup gling or wax work figures is being given for public amusement and it be unlawful for any one to employ or procure or cause to be employed or procured any person to sell or furnish any malt vinous or spirituous liquors at such place SEC 2 it shall be unlawful for adv one within the limits of ogden city to cause procure or employ any female to play tor hire drink or gain upon any musical instrument in any drinking saloon dance room or dance cellar public garden or any public highway common or street or any lewd bouse or disorderly place whatsoever where two or more persons are assembled together and it shall be unlawful for any female to so play upon any musical inspru nent SEC 3 it ahall be enlaw ful for any one within the limits of ogden city to cause or procure or employ any tempie to dance promenade or otherwise exhibit herself for hire drink or gain in any drinking saloon dance cellar or bacce room public garden public highway or in any place whatsoever theatre excepted where two or more persons are assembled together 4 any person violating any of alie provisions of this ordinance dball be liable to pay a fine in any sum less than one hundred dollars the committee should report their findings that their action might be approved by the council mr brought up the matter of movine the city jail from its present quarterma qu artera to the basement of the new city hall alie old place had been broken through BO often and ahas BO full of vermin that it wag almost impossible to keep anybody there it would take no extra fuel to heat alie cells and would in every respect be a better place than the old the matter on motion of mr pre chaw was referred to committee on public buildings by this time it was remembered that there were a number of bills awaiting action and they
