Show THE RACE PROBLEM IN THE SOOTH the disposition to be made of the negro citizens of our republic has formed a rather interesting topic for dispute at one time in the past and by the trend of present indications we should eay is quite likely to do so again it is a fact pretty well understood that in many portions of the south the colored laton is greatly in excess of the whites and in numerous districts where the whites are in the majority the numerical balance is rapidly changing color whatever the race inferiority may be in other respects it is a painful truth to which the people of the south can testify to their sorrow that the average african as a breeder can discount bis fairer countryman two to one the condition that would follow were the suffrage allowed to take a literally constitutional course is too intricate to be contemplated should such a thing be insisted upon there is no doubt that the white inhabitants in a great many densely populated dis would pack up and leave in a body however proper it might be under the law for white men to submit peaceably to african rule it will require something moro persuasive than has yet appeared to convince them of it the northern politician may shout fraud and corruption till dooms day and BO far as necessity requires to maintain local government under white control the fraud and corruption will go on just the same certain hysterical persons have been exerting themselves since before the civil war to put in motion a scheme to have the surplus colored population transported back to africa they are now agitating with vehemence the plan of sending them over to our sister republic to kielp civilize and redeem the waste places of mexico one scheme is about as visionary as the other the colored man as the Owner Journal suggests very emphatically is here to stay and if any plan shall succeed n overcoming or abating the evils of bis presence it will assuredly be the one that accepts this presumption |
