Groff con- Finding of Bodies on Desert Causes According to statements made by some Ogden people the account published iu ihe Examiner of the finding of dead bodies on the desert west from the end of construction work on the San Pedro road to the California line, is of especial Interest to Ogdeu people for the reason that it appears probable that at least three Ogden n:eu have lost their lives aithln the last mouth on that desert. Tne names of the men are Philip Gelgtr. William Hancock and George Holiberg. Geiger haa a wife and child in this city and Hancock formerly worked for H. P. Mclardle, the restaurant wan. The three men left here about Jan. 1 for the end of the Clark toad, and three days later letters were received from them stating that they were starting across the desert for Needles. Cal. Hancock had some affairs here that were left in the hands of a friend to close up, and which would have furnished him some money. This friend, Mr. MrCardle. wrote to him at Needles, se nding his letter Jan. 5. The letter called for an Immediate reply, but none has !eeu received. Mrs. Geiger has not heard from her husband since they left the east aide of the desert. She is very much worried over the prolonged lack of news from him. The three men went to the southern country with a view to starting up in business in case they found conditions favorable there. Mrs. 8. p. Geiger was seen in to the above, regard and she stated that her son had written to his wife on January ft. She also states that Mr. McCardle had told wife that'll bad written a letter to Geiger at the Needles, Cal., on January 7. with a return card on the envelope asking that if not received It be returned to Ogden in ten days If Phil Geiger had not received this letter the (late for Its return Is long overdue. The principal matter up for discussion was the matter of the county assessor aseeMlng the property of corporations in this county that have been heretofore assessed by the state board of equalisation. The reports of the committee which haa had the matter in hand, were made by County At torney Hulnniskl and Chairman Stan ford. The latter reported that the committee had visited Bat Lake City and had had a discussion upon the matter with the county officials of that city. County Attorney Hulanlski reported that ho had conferred with County Attorney W'eatervelt of Balt Lake county in regard to the matter, but nothing was done in the matter; It was the unanimous opinion that the law was invalid and unless the assessments were made by legally authorised persons that the assessment could not be collected. It ia also the opinion of the legal representative of the two leading counties of the state that the whole assessment by. the state board of equalization is nnconatltu-tional.- lt was the order of the Imard.that the county assessor will work in harmony with the state board as a matter of the protection of the countys interests.
