Ho nlso admitted that while in the employ of tho dead millionaire turf-man, turf-man, he oncouraged Mrs. Lillian Ashley Ash-ley Turnbull, mother of tho contestant, contest-ant, to write him confidential letters. Because of delay in tho nrr.val of attorneys from San Francisco, the trial was not resumed until the afternoon. after-noon. Wood said he was employed by Popo for a while nnd Inter had an ngreojr -t with Mrs. Turnbull to help her pi nt her claims against Baldwin, Bald-win, lie mot tho horseman at Saratoga, Sara-toga, N. Y , told him that tho woman wanted $75,000 fron him, becauso of alleged betrayal and lator entered Baldwin's employment, when ho again oncournged Mrs. Turnbull to wrlto confidential to him. The letter pre-sontod pre-sontod as evidence at the present aro alleged to have been written by Mrs. Turnbull but she testified on tho stand, that with ono exception they wore all forgeries. On cross examination, Wood said Ho could not remember aver having testified that he had investigated Mrs Turnbull's ca"rly life and had suld ho could find nothing about her. Ho Identified a letter read to him as tho ono ho hnd written Mrs. Turnbull and which she declared "cruel and abusive." One of its phrases was to the effect that In all his thirty years of work among criminals, he had never nev-er found a case In which there was so much depravity and deception as In hers. He declared that Baldwin told him at Saratoga that ho had fought such cases as that of Mrs Turnbull, and had comprised some, but that Mrs. Turnbull never should have ono cent of tho $75,000 sho wanted. an |
